  • Hello My name is Brett I'm a UK citizen from birth. I have a City and Guilds in Brickwork from a 3 year course 1 day a week at North East Surrey College of Technology {NESCOT} Where not only did i learn the practical side of bricklaying but i was also taught a lot about the correct methods and important building regulations. When on a City and Guilds course because it was a longer course than the todays NVQ {which can be done in as little as 6 months} and the students are only taught to lay bricks without any of the studies that should go with it specifications etcI I was taught how to build specialist brickwork such as Arches stonework and working with flint and many types of different mortar pointing finishes these skills aren't taught at the colleges anymore. I've worked in construction as a bricklayer for 30 years working on very large scale and smaller scale projects. I do with all the years I've been in the bricklaying trade have a very good understanding of the construction and repairs of buildings and outbuildings. I am and always have been hard working and trust worthy. I can explain to any future clients exactly what the problem is with a part of a house/building which is degrading due to the age of the house/building or problems which have been caused on newer houses/buildings due to bad quality workmanship and not following the correct work methods . As well as doing being competent at new large scale building alterations I'm also competent for doing restoration work and small to large alterations and fixing all types of Repairs in any type of construction material. I can also do handyman jobs small plumbing repair jobs And flat pack furniture assembly. I work on my own and for this reason I am extremely competitive for the price of any job that i do. I won't try to take on any job that I'm not 100% sure that I can do it to the best possible standard for you. Because word of mouth is always the best advertisement for any builder. Thanks for reading. Kind Regards Brett

What qualifications do stonemasons typically have?

Fully qualified stonemasons bring years of training and hands-on experience working with different types of stone and masonry techniques.

These are the standard qualifications most stonemasons have:

  • Apprenticeship in stonemasonry: Many stonemasons begin their careers with a formal apprenticeship, combining hands-on training with college-based learning. This route typically leads to an NVQ qualification.

  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in stonemasonry: These qualifications demonstrate competence in essential skills such as stone cutting, carving, repairs, and restoration work.

  • CSCS Card: A Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card confirms the stonemason has completed the required training and meets UK health and safety standards

  • Health and safety training: Check that your stonemason has up-to-date training in handling heavy materials, working at height, and using specialist tools.

  • Experience with specific stones: Ensure the stonemason has hands-on experience with the type of stone in your project — whether limestone, sandstone, granite, marble or other natural stone.

If your project involves a listed building, period property, or a site in a conservation area, you may need a specialist stonemason with training in traditional methods and restoration techniques.

Questions to ask a local stonemason before hiring

Before choosing a stonemason, it’s worth asking a few key questions to make sure they have the right skills for your project.

How much experience do you have with this type of project?

Ask how long they have been working as a stonemason and whether they have handled projects similar to yours. Experience with the same type of stonework, such as walls, fireplaces, or restoration, is especially valuable.

You can also check for qualifications like NVQ Levels 2 or 3, and anything else relevant for the work you need done. At t MyBuilder, we verify every tradesperson’s identity, company details, and relevant certifications such as NVQ Levels 2 or 3 during registration.

Do you have public liability insurance?

A stonemason should have public liability insurance to cover any damage or accidents that may occur during the project. Always request to see proof of insurance for peace of mind and to protect yourself from potential risks.

Can you provide references or examples of previous work?

It’s always a good idea to ask for examples of previous stonemasonry work. A stonemason near you should be able to provide references or photographs of past projects. This gives you insight into the quality of their work and their experience with similar projects.

Do you offer any guarantees on your work?

Find out if the stonemason provides a guarantee on their work. A warranty ensures that any issues arising from their work will be rectified within a specified period. This is particularly important for long-lasting materials such as stone.

Do you handle all aspects of the project?

Ensure the stonemason can handle all aspects of the job, from preparation to the final touches. This includes sourcing materials, providing advice on stone selection and ensuring the project meets all safety and structural requirements.

What is included in your service and costs?

Clarify whether the stonemason will handle site preparation, sourcing and transporting stone, advising on suitable materials, and clearing away waste. Ask for a written quote that breaks down labour, materials, and clean-up so you can compare prices fairly and avoid unexpected costs later.

How long will the project take, and what could affect the timescale?

Request an estimated start and finish date, and ask about potential delays — such as poor weather, site access, or stone availability. This gives you a realistic idea of how long the job may take.

Can existing stonework be repaired, or does it always need replacing?

Does stonework need ongoing maintenance?

Stonework is highly durable, but some maintenance may be required over time. This can include cleaning, repointing mortar joints, or applying protective sealants, depending on the stone type and exposure to weather. A stonemason can advise what’s best for your property.

Do stonemasons create headstones?
