What Determines the Cost of Reupholstering a Chair?

Reupholstering a chair involves various elements that determine the total expense. From fabric choices to labour and repairs, understanding these factors will help you plan your project efficiently and stay within budget.

Fabric Choices: Affordable to Premium Options

The fabric you select significantly impacts the cost. Affordable materials like cotton or polyester cost around £20 to £40 per metre and are ideal for simple projects. Premium fabrics such as velvet, leather, or bespoke designs range from £60 to £100 per metre, offering a luxurious aesthetic but requiring extra care.

Labour Costs: What You’re Paying For

Labour charges depend on the complexity of the project and the upholsterer’s professional experience. Standard rates range from £30 to £60 per hour, but intricate designs or larger chairs may add an extra £50 to £200. Upholsterers in urban areas or those with specialised skills may charge higher rates due to demand.

Repairs and Padding: Essential Add-Ons

Structural repairs and padding replacement are additional costs that ensure your chair’s durability and comfort. Frame repairs, such as fixing springs or joints, typically cost between £50 and £150. Replacing seat padding costs £20 to £50, with premium foam options adding to the total expense.

Chair Size and Design Complexity

The size and design intricacy of your chair also influence costs. Oversized chairs, such as sofa chairs, require more fabric and labour, which can increase the price by £100 to £300. Detailed designs, such as ornate or wingback chairs, demand extra time and care, making them more expensive to reupholster, with additional costs ranging from £50 to £200 depending on the complexity.

By considering these factors, you can better understand the costs of reupholstering your chair and make informed decisions to balance quality with budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reupholstering a Chair

How long does it take to reupholster a chair?

Simple dining chairs can be reupholstered in a few hours, while larger or more intricate chairs like Cintique chairs may take 2-5 days. The timeframe also depends on the availability of materials and the upholsterer’s schedule.

Can I reupholster a chair myself?

Yes, DIY reupholstery is possible for simple chairs with removable cushions. For complex designs, hiring an upholstery professional is recommended to ensure quality results. Mistakes in DIY projects can lead to additional costs in repairs or materials.

Is reupholstering a Cintique chair worth it?

Absolutely. Cintique chairs are high-quality pieces, and reupholstering ensures their durability and value over time. It also allows you to refresh their look with modern fabrics while preserving the classic craftsmanship.

What is the lifespan of reupholstered chairs?

Reupholstered chairs can last 10-20 years with proper care and maintenance. Regular cleaning, avoiding direct sunlight, and gentle usage can further extend their longevity.

Are there hidden costs in chair reupholstery?

Additional costs may include padding replacement (£20-£50) or frame repairs (£50-£150) if needed. Always ask for a detailed quote to avoid surprises and ensure all services are accounted for.

1979 flat, very loose areas of original screed exposing paper slip layer

James Philip Morrison 24/08/2026 - 10.45 AM

I would be extremely grateful for any advice you could give me with the following.  I am trying to refurbish the floors of my 1979 1st floor flat. After having to break out an area of cracked original concrete screed I have exposed what I think is an old paper 'slip sheet' or debonding layer which was laid under chicken wire that must have been the base for the original screed. There are still patches where the screed is very crumbly and loose and the entire screed subfloor appears to be floated over the paper layer which is separating it from the structural concrete beneath.   How can I repair this area in preparation for a layer of SLC? I am concerned about pouring a liquid screed over the exposed paper. kind regards

Ben 17/08/2026 - 8.12 AM

my semidetached house has an enclosed staircase at the external wall of the house. My question is- Can I remove the wall between the stairs and lounge for un open space? the wall sound empty not brick, but thill wall continues upstairs till the ce lift ceiling so is part of the box bedroom upstairs which sits on the top of the stairs. Some people said is possible other might not because of the bedroom wall upstairs. Can somebody advise me please? no structural engineer will come for an hour fee to look at it, all I called is £500 for a survey and I think is too much just for a question. I will appreciate any professional advice, thanks!8

Balcony Repair and Renewal

Anonymous user 17/08/2026 - 8.12 AM

We have an outdoor balcony c. 8mx3m of which 2/3 has a fibreglass floor (c.2005) and 1/3 concrete paving slabs (original 1995). It's covered with 120mm pressure treated decking timber mounted on pressure treated timber battens sitting on narrow pieces of tiles. Rainwater downpipes drain onto the floor and away under the battens and tiles. Some of the battens are rotten and need replacing. Part of the ceiling in the room below the join between the fibreglass and paving floor is showing some signs of damp. Q1: What is the best way to seal and cover the floor containing both the fibreglass and the slabs? Q2: Would the flooring be able to support a replacement composite deck? Thanks!
