Crack in wall

Anonymous user 05/11/2026 - 8.06 AM

I just noticed a crack has appeared in my wall near the rear of my bungalow, who should I seek advice from?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If, when you bought the property you had a survey done, it might be worth asking them to inspect - may be dependent on when the survey was originally done. If the crack appears on both sides of the wall it may be more serious. Worth checking if any other properties nearby have had a similar issue or if there has been any construction or drainage work undertaken nearby recently. The best bet would be a structural engineer which might be what a builder could recommend depending on an initial inspection.

I’d suggest getting an experienced builder to inspect the crack first. It could be something as simple as movement in the plaster or minor settlement. We’d normally check the width, direction and whether the crack is visible externally too. If there are signs of structural movement, the next step would be to involve a structural engineer before carrying out repairs.

Is the crack internally or externally ? It can depend on lots of potential issues, if external a good builder then if he thinks serious a structural engineer or surveyor, but : It could be cracked render, water ingress, lots of things, Advice shouldnt cost you anything pick form selected verified sites so people are qualified.
