Average cost of damp proofing in Edinburgh

The average cost for damp proofing in Edinburgh can range anywhere from £1,000 - £5,000, depending on the property size, type, and age, the type of damp you have, the size of the affected area, and any additional work required like replastering or repainting.

To break down the cost further, there are three main types of damp, each with different treatment approaches and costs: Condensation damp treatment cost: £150–£400 per room

Usually caused by poor ventilation or humidity. Treatment may include improving airflow, installing vents, or applying anti-condensation paint.

Penetrating damp treatment options costs: £350–£1,000 per wall

Caused by water ingress through walls, roofs, or gutters. To combat penetrating damp, a professional can fix leaks, apply waterproof coatings, or repair brickwork and pointing.

Rising damp solutions costs: £500–£2,000+ per wall

The most complex and costly to fix, rising damp occurs when moisture travels up through walls from the ground. Treatment often involves installing a damp proof course, replastering, and redecorating.

Questions to ask damp specialists in Edinburgh

You want to be sure that you are hiring a damp proofing contractor in Edinburgh with the right experience, skills, and understanding of your property and job requirements.

Here are some key questions to ask damp proofers that should guide your final choice:

What qualifications do you have?

Check for recognised certifications such as CSRT (Certified Surveyor in Remedial Treatment) or CSSW (Certificate in Structural Waterproofing). Qualifications show the tradesperson has the proper training to diagnose and treat damp effectively.

Are you a member of any professional bodies?

Membership in professional organisations like the Property Care Association (PCA) indicates the Edinburgh damp specialist adheres to industry standards and best practices.

Are you insured, and do you offer a warranty?

Insurance protects you against accidents or damage during the work, while a warranty shows confidence in the longevity of the treatment.

What treatment do you recommend, and why?

Different damp types require different solutions, so ask the damp specialist in Edinburgh to explain their recommended approach and why it’s the best option for your home.

Is the work compliant with building regulations?

For certain treatments, like tanking or major structural repairs, ensure the Edinburgh damp proofing contractor will follow all relevant regulations and can provide certification if needed.

What is included in your quote?

Clarify what the quote encompasses, with typical services including a site survey, a written report, labour, materials, and any replastering or repainting, so there are no surprises later.

How long will the job take to complete?

Ask for a realistic timeline based on the type of damp, the size of the affected area, and any additional work like plastering or painting. This helps you plan around the disruption.
