Different double glazing types and repair costs

When you are thinking about double glazed windows, the type of window plays a substantial role in determining the repair costs. Here is how different windows affect the repair costs:

  • Casement Windows: Typically open like doors and may require more intricate hardware repairs, which can lead to higher costs.
  • Sash Windows: Often more intricate due to their sliding mechanism, potentially increasing repair expenses due to complexity.
  • Tilt and Turn Windows: Their dual-functionality design makes them potentially more expensive to repair, as adjustments need to be precise.
  • Bay Windows: Usually larger and involve more glass area, thereby increasing both material and labour costs significantly.

As such a specialised repair service, it can be hard to know where to look to find the right person for the job. You can easily find double glazing specialists near you through MyBuilder. Simply post your job today and talk to different tradespeople near you.

When do double glazed windows need repair or replacement?

When your windows start showing signs of wear, you may face a key question: should you repair or replace your double glazed windows?

There are instances where replacing double glazing may be the better investment, particularly if the frames are damaged, the units are outdated, or repairs would only provide a short-term fix.

Your double glazed windows may need attention when:

  • You notice condensation or misting between the panes, indicating a failed seal and reduced insulation performance.
  • The frames are warped, cracked, or draughty, making the windows difficult to open or close properly.

Reseal double glazed windows cost

If resealing your double glazed windows is needed, most homeowners choose a professional for long-lasting results, especially if insulation and waterproofing matter.

How professionals fix double glazed windows:

Diagnosis: Trained glaziers inspect for failed seals, misted glass, draughts, or physical damage around frames and units. They’ll check for lost insulation and any signs of moisture ingress.

Removal of old sealant/unit: If resealing is viable, the old sealant or gasket is removed cleanly with specialist tools, ensuring minimal damage to the frame or glass. For misted or “blown” units, they’ll recommend full glass replacement because internal condensation can’t be fixed just with resealing.

Professional resealing: Window specialists use high-grade silicone sealant, precisely applied around the glass and frame junction for a watertight, draught-free finish. If the gasket is worn, new professional-grade rubber or foam can be installed.

Testing & adjustment: After sealing, they check for a tight fit, clean lines, and perfect insulation. Hinges, handles and locks may be adjusted for smooth operation. Resealing your double glazed windows can really help it from becoming a bigger problem in the long run.

Tips to Save on Double Glazing Repairs

Fixing your double glazing doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With the right approach, you can keep expenses down and still get your windows working properly again.

Below are some tips that can help you make savings on your next double glazing repair:

  • Schedule your repairs outside of peak seasons to potentially access reduced rates.
  • Focus on preventative maintenance to extend the lifespan of your windows and avoid costly repairs.
  • Consider local tradespeople who may offer more competitive rates than large companies.
  • Many services offer warranties, providing peace of mind and protection against future problems.
  • Invest in quality replacement parts for seal or glass repairs to minimise future repair needs.

These approaches offer practical ways to keep the costs of double glazing repairs manageable, helping you maintain your windows without stretching your budget. If you want to know more about maintenance, see this window cleaning cost guide

FAQ: Common questions about double glazing repair costs

How long does it usually take to fix blown double glazing?

On average, replacing a blown insulated glass unit (IGU) takes about 1 to 3 hours per window. The actual time depends on factors such as the window size, accessibility and the condition of the existing frames. Sourcing or manufacturing a custom-sized IGU may add extra waiting time.

What benefits can I expect from repairing blown double glazing rather than leaving it as is?

Repairing blown double glazing restores thermal efficiency, helping to reduce energy bills by improving insulation. It also enhances the aesthetic appearance, reduces the risk of condensation and improves noise reduction. Leaving it unrepaired can lead to more expensive damage to the surrounding window structure over time.

How can I prevent my double glazing from blowing in the future?

To prevent future issues, ensure proper installation, maintain good ventilation to manage indoor humidity, regularly check window seals and address issues early and avoid putting excessive pressure on the window panes. Routine maintenance checks can help extend the life of your double glazing.

How does the misted double glazing repair cost differ from other types of repairs?

Misted double glazing repairs often involve replacing the window unit rather than a simple fix, as the issue is typically with the failure of the seal, allowing moisture to enter. This can result in slightly higher costs compared to repairing a small crack or hinge replacement. However, the exact cost will depend on window size and location.

Bifold door leak

Anonymous user 05/06/2026 - 8.00 AM

Hi wanted some advice please I have some origin bi fold doors (3yrs old) Which have been supplied and installed by a company. In dec we noticed water pooling on tile on the left and damaged skirting. We’ve ripped off skirting board recently due to heavy rain and some plasterboard which was damp and inside when you put water in track it drains through holes of cill but still leaking in the corner inside too. This door is used for opening for access to garden Haven’t noticed anything on the opposite end of the bifold (that we can see) I’ve asked glazer and he put a bit of silicone at end of track but hasn’t made any difference Clearly it’s rain water hitting door and then leaks into track and trickles out onto brickwork inside .From what I can see there is foam there on inside and siliconed well outside. Please can someone help.. fed Up of being fobbed off as there’s been few issues with random windows around house. Is there a fix without removing the door?thanks
