  • I have been running this gardening business very successfully for almost 10 years. I used to be a tree surgeon many years ago so still have fair knowledge and advice although I don’t do that in this business. I do not take waste away as it has become too expensive to the client. Happy to place in green bin ir bag for client to dispose of at their own leisure. I love weeding, i do not use any sprays. I work to high standards and have clients upto about 25 miles radius and can cover most areas in Somerset. Monday to Friday I charge £40phr and with Saturday rate is £45phr and Sunday rate is £50phr.With and visit my time of travel to you is added and calculated by my hourly rate client backed by life360 app with accurate information. I provide an invoice at completion of work where i like to be paid promptly. I accept card, cash or transfer. I do not accept cheques or late payments. Late payments incur a fee of £25 if unpaid after 7days. I don’t like time wasters. Quotes are free within five miles if further than Ten miles then my hourly rate is applied to cover my time and duration of visit. Tasks i cover: Weeding, strimming, Brush cutting mowing, chipping - upto (150mm) green (not dead wood)chipping has additional costs depending on the work needed and the fuel used and transportation so i usually say if my chipper needs to be added to a job that will be an added £100 to cover everything, as its Plant i can do lawn dressing, pressure washing, planting, hedge trimming (only out of bird nesting season which is from March 1st-August 31st., mulching, edging and advice, client rotation., payment on completion of work at the end of each visit promptly made preferably before i leave. What to ask a local tree surgeon before hiring

When you are hiring a local tree surgeon, asking the right questions helps ensure you choose a qualified professional, prepared to tackle any complex tree-related project safely.

Here are some key questions to ask before making your decision:

Can you provide a written quote detailing the work, costs, and any permits needed?

A professional tree surgeon should always be able to provide a clear, written quote outlining exactly what’s included in the job. This should cover details such as the type of work required, the timelines, and any additional costs for equipment or waste disposal.

What is your experience with the specific type of tree or work I need?

It’s important to ask tree surgeons about their experience with your particular species of tree or the type of work required, for example, large tree removals, precision pruning, or handling disease management.

Do you include tree debris removal and site cleanup as part of your service?

Clarifying whether the tree surgeon handles removal of branches, foliage, and other waste helps avoid surprises. Some tree surgeons include full debris clearance and garden tidying in their fee, while others may leave brush and logs for the homeowner to dispose of.

Can you provide references or examples of past work?

Previous customer feedback is a strong indicator of what you may expect when working with a potential tree surgeon you’re considering hiring. Find customer reviews and images of a tree surgeon’s past projects on MyBuilder.

What qualifications should tree surgeons near me have?

Want to be sure your tree surgeon knows their stuff? Look out for qualifications from trusted bodies like the Arboricultural Association’s Approved Contractor Scheme, or check if they’re trained through LANTRA or NPTC in professional tree care and maintenance.

A properly certified tree surgeon won’t just bring their skills, they’ll usually back their work with a guarantee and carry public liability insurance, giving you extra peace of mind that the job will be done safely and to a high standard.

FAQ: Your Questions About Tree Surgeons Answered

How do I know if a tree surgeon is qualified?

You can check if a tree surgeon is qualified by verifying their certifications, such as NPTC (City & Guilds), LANTRA Awards or Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor status. Always ask to see proof of qualifications and insurance.

MyBuilder also makes sure that all tradespeople, sole traders and companies, are qualified by obtaining certifications for regulated jobs or assessing their expertise through an online skills check.

Should local tree surgeons have insurance?

Yes, reputable tree surgeons should have public liability insurance, typically covering £1 million to £5 million, to protect against accidents or damage to property. Always ask for proof of insurance before hiring.

Do tree surgeons charge a call-out fee?

Some tree surgeons charge a call-out fee, especially for emergency work or small jobs. Always confirm pricing and whether a site visit is included in the quote before booking a service.

Can tree surgeons work in the rain?

Tree surgeons sometimes work in light rain, but typically postpone jobs if the weather becomes unsafe. Wet conditions can make climbing and handling tools hazardous, with risks such as slipping on branches, unstable ground, and equipment malfunctions. For basic tasks at ground level or planning meetings, light drizzle may not cause delays.
