FAQ: Common questions about stone wall building costs
Do I need planning permission to build a stone wall?
Planning permission is generally not required for boundary walls under 2 metres high. However, if the wall faces a highway and is over 1 metre tall, you may need permission. Always check with your local planning authority before starting work.
Do stone walls require ongoing maintenance?
Stone walls are low-maintenance, but occasional repointing, cleaning, or repairing displaced stones may be needed over time. Retaining walls may also require drainage maintenance to prevent water pressure build-up.
Can I use reclaimed stone to save money?
Yes, reclaimed stone is a popular choice for those looking to reduce stone wall building costs. It can be more affordable and gives a characterful, aged appearance. However, availability and consistency in size can vary.
How long does it take to build a stone wall?
Building a basic stone wall typically takes 1-3 days for a small project (under 10m), depending on wall height, stone type, and weather. Larger or complex retaining walls can take 1-2 weeks, factor in drying time for mortar.

Choosing the right professional for outdoor steps
Anonymous user 16/09/2025 - 12.46 PM
We have a small, widish set of external steps on our Victorian apartment building in Altrincham, Manchester. The steps are tiled, but some tiles are coming away. Underneath, it looks like the original Yorkstone may still be present. We’re trying to work out what kind of tradesperson would be best to: assess whether the Yorkstone underneath can be restored and left exposed, or, if not, replace the tiled finish with reclaimed Victorian-style tiles. Should we be looking for a builder, stonemason, or specialist tiler for this type of job?
