Diagnosing the Damage: What Approach Does Your Repair Need?
Before selecting tools or materials, spend a couple of minutes establishing what you're actually dealing with. The type and cause of the damage determines both the method and the likelihood of the repair holding long-term.
Hairline cracks (under 2mm wide) in otherwise sound plasterboard are usually caused by normal thermal movement, minor vibration, or minor settling. These are surface-only issues and can be filled directly without reinforcement.
Larger cracks (2mm and above) - particularly those that follow the line of the plasterboard joints beneath - are often caused by the jointing tape or filler between boards failing. Filling over the top without reinforcing the joint will crack again. These need tape and compound.
Cracks following a specific pattern (spiderweb, branching, or running from corners of openings) can indicate structural movement. If the crack has appeared recently, is growing, or is accompanied by other signs of movement (sticking doors, sloping floors), get a structural assessment before any cosmetic repair.
Small holes (up to approximately 75mm) - from screws, hooks, light fittings, or minor impacts - can be filled or backed and filled without cutting out any board.

Tools and Materials You'll Need
Getting everything together before you start matters more for ceiling repairs than most jobs - once filler or compound is mixed and applied, you're working against the clock before it begins to set.
Having to stop and look for a tool mid-repair is how finishes get ruined. The materials needed depend on the repair type, but the basic toolkit is similar across all approaches.
For hairline cracks and small holes:
- Flexible decorator's filler (tube or tub) - pre-mixed, paintable, flexible when dry
- Fine-grit sandpaper (120 grit)
- Damp cloth for cleaning the area
- Putty knife or filling knife
For larger cracks and tape repairs:
- Jointing compound (setting-type for the first coat; all-purpose for finishing)
- Paper jointing tape or fibreglass mesh tape
- Wide filling knife or skimming trowel (150–200mm)
- Sandpaper (80 grit then 120 grit)
For holes:

How to Repair a Hairline Crack in a Plasterboard Ceiling
A hairline crack in otherwise sound plasterboard is the simplest ceiling repair. The key is surface preparation and using the right filler, one that stays flexible rather than setting rigid, which is more likely to crack again with further movement.
Step 1: Open the crack slightly.
Run the edge of a filling knife along the crack to open it slightly into a V-profile. This sounds counterintuitive but gives the filler more surface area to bond to. A crack filled flush to its surface edges often pops back out as a visible line. Use a vacuum or damp cloth to remove all dust from the opened crack.
Step 2: Apply flexible filler.
Using a filling knife, press flexible decorator's filler firmly into the crack and draw the knife across to leave the surface slightly proud. Work in short sections. Allow to dry fully, typically 2–4 hours for thin applications.
Step 3: Sand and apply a second coat if needed.
Sand lightly with 120-grit paper when fully dry. Filler often shrinks slightly as it dries, leaving a shallow dip. A second thin coat fills this. Sand again once dry to a smooth, flush surface.
Step 4: Prime and paint.
New filler is more absorbent than surrounding painted surfaces, a spot primer or diluted first coat ensures the painted finish is even rather than showing a dull patch where the filler sits.
How to Repair a Larger Crack with Joint Tape
Larger cracks, particularly those running along plasterboard joints, need reinforcing with tape before filling, otherwise the repair cracks again as the underlying board continues to move slightly.
Step 1: Prepare the surface.
Remove any loose filler, flaking paint, or debris from around the crack. Widen the crack slightly with a filling knife if needed and vacuum clean.
Step 2: Apply a thin bed coat of jointing compound.
Apply a thin layer of jointing compound along and either side of the crack, approximately 50–75mm either side. This gives the tape something to bed into.
Step 3: Bed the tape.
Press fibreglass mesh tape (or paper tape, both work, though mesh is more forgiving for beginners) into the wet compound along the crack, pressing it flat with your knife. Avoid wrinkles or bubbles in the tape, these show through the final finish.
Step 4: Apply the first coat over the tape.
Cover the tape with a full coat of jointing compound, feathering the edges outward to blend into the surrounding ceiling. Allow to dry fully before the next coat.
Step 5: Apply a second (and possibly third) coat.
Each coat should be wider and thinner than the last, feathering the edges to create an imperceptible transition to the surrounding surface. Sand lightly between coats once dry.
Step 6: Skim and finish.
Once the compound is fully dry, a thin skim coat of finishing plaster over the repair (see the skim coat section below) produces the flattest and most invisible result. Alternatively, sand to a smooth finish with 80 grit then 120 grit, prime, and paint.
How to Repair a Small Hole in Plasterboard
Small holes, from screws, hooks, or minor impacts, are straightforward to fill provided the surrounding plasterboard is sound and the hole doesn't extend all the way through to open space above.
For holes under approximately 25mm:
A direct fill with pre-mixed filler or patching compound is sufficient. Apply with a filling knife, press firmly to fill the hole completely, and draw the knife flat across the surface to leave it slightly proud. Allow to dry, sand flush, and apply a second coat if any shrinkage is visible.
For holes up to approximately 75mm:
Holes of this size need some form of backing to prevent the filler from sinking or cracking into the void. Options include:
- Crumpling a small piece of damp newspaper and pushing it into the hole as a temporary backing, then filling over it
- Using fibreglass mesh patch tape applied over the hole (it bridges the gap and the compound bonds to the mesh)
- Using a proprietary repair patch kit (see the repair patches section)
Once backed, build up the fill in thin layers rather than one deep application - thick filler is more prone to cracking as it dries.
How to Repair a Large Hole in Plasterboard
Large holes, from door handles, structural access, removed light fittings, or damage, need a proper patch with a solid backing support. Attempting to fill a large void with filler alone will result in sinking, cracking, and a visible repair.
Method 1 - Cut to timber supports:

Step 1: Cut the damaged area back to a clean rectangle or square using a plasterboard saw. Make the cuts to the nearest available joists or noggings so the new patch has solid fixing points at its edges.

Step 2: If the cut doesn't reach joists on all sides, fit timber noggings, short pieces of 50×50mm timber fitted between joists at the cut edges, secured with timber screws from above if the loft is accessible, or from the side if not.

Step 3: Cut a new piece of plasterboard to fit the opening precisely. Fix to the joists and noggings with plasterboard screws at 150mm centres.

Step 4: Tape the joins between the new patch and the existing ceiling with jointing tape and compound, following the larger crack method above.
Method 2 - Metal repair clips:
Proprietary metal repair clips are inserted through the hole and clipped to the back of the existing board, creating a fixing point for a new patch without needing to access the joists above. These work well for medium-sized holes and are considerably easier than cutting to joists in an inaccessible ceiling.
How to Use Plasterboard Repair Patches
Plasterboard repair patch kits are available from most DIY stores and are specifically designed for holes up to approximately 1500200mm. They provide a quick solution that bridges the hole without cutting back to joists, useful for accessible single-skin plasterboard ceilings.
Most kits include a mesh or metal patch that sticks to the existing ceiling, bridging the hole, and jointing compound to fill and finish over the patch.

Note: Repair patches are designed for single-skin plasterboard and work well on ceilings with solid plasterboard above. They're not suitable for hollow partitions or ceilings where the patch needs to support any weight.

How to Skim Coat After a Repair
For a truly invisible repair, particularly on a ceiling where raking light from a window will show any imperfection, a thin skim coat of finishing plaster over the repaired area is the best final step.
Once jointing compound is fully dry and sanded smooth, apply a thin skim of finish plaster (Thistle Multi-Finish or similar) over the repaired area. Work it flat with a plastering trowel, feathering the edges into the surrounding ceiling. As the skim begins to stiffen (10–20 minutes), tighten it with a damp trowel in overlapping passes.
The skim must be thin - 2-3mm maximum. Too thick and it will crack.

When to Call a Plasterer
Ceiling repairs are unforgiving - small imperfections that would be invisible on a wall become obvious on a horizontal surface in natural light. There are specific situations where a professional plasterer is the right call.
When the damage is extensive.
A ceiling with multiple large holes, widespread crack networks, or significant areas of blown plasterboard is more efficiently and better addressed by a plasterer who can carry out the full repair in a single session.
When the ceiling has a skim finish.
If the existing ceiling has a smooth skim rather than bare plasterboard, achieving an invisible join between a local repair and the existing skim is very difficult. A plasterer can re-skim the full ceiling face for a uniform result.
When cracks indicate possible structural movement.
If the crack pattern suggests something other than normal thermal movement - running from load-bearing points, following structural junctions, or appearing suddenly alongside other symptoms - get the structure assessed before any cosmetic repair.
When working overhead is a limitation.
Ceiling work overhead is physically demanding and requires a stable, properly elevated working platform. If you don't have appropriate access equipment, professional work is safer.

I have used cement and soft sand ealier and now realise that cement is not breathable, and lime should be use instead. can you please tell me what type of lime should I use and in what ratio. Is NHL 2.5 or 3.5 okay to use and what type of sand should be use with it
