Best way to prep this wall for plastering?

Akshay Patel 14/10/2026 - 9.37 AM

Hi all, I have done some plastering recently its all turned out fairly well considering i'm new to it. However that's all been on fresh new plasterboard. I want to skim this kitchen wall. I have filled most of the big holes with bonding adhesive. My plan from here is to SBR the wall and then apply 2 coats of multi-finish. Would that be the correct way or should I undercoat first? I can't seem to add a picture but can send if possible. Thanks for any help :)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

SBR /PVA best for high suction masonry or raw plasterboard BLUE GRID best for "shiny" or painted surface because contains sand/grid that provide mechanical "key" for plaster to grab onto. Is the wall you are working on currently painted or is it bare masonry?

SBR Suction Bond Retard it’s in the name. Right you mentioned Multi finish correct? British gypsum will not recommend this ! my advice is one of the British gypsum adhesives. But PVA will work! Question you need to ask yourself is what is the substrate you are going onto and do some research. Question is how long do you want it to stay on the wall. Cement,Gypsum and Lime based plasters all different elements some chemicals react with each other!

2 coats of pva. Allow to dry. Apply 1 coat of finish ie multifinish. Allow to firm and flatten in with trowel. Apply second coat of finish. Total thickness 3 to 5 mm. Flatten with trowel at 20 min intervals x3. Lightly lubricated with water.

2 coats of pva 70-30 then once dry 50-50 once tacky skim i wouldn't advise to use sbr as a nightmare to clean if left longer than 30 seconds. Unless very high suction I wouldn't touch sbr inside.

I think your best option would be to bluegrit/thistle bond the wall, PVA and sbr can be unpredictable on different backgrounds, and you may find yourself coating the wall too early or too late, if you paint the wall the day before with blue grit, u will have a uniform surface to apply the plaster to the next day with the same suction and surface all round
