Groundwork & Foundations- 5 Oct 2026
It didn’t. Furnished them with all the photos etc. Agreed a provisional price. Gave me a start date, then cancelled as he was behind, then ignored my messages until I asked point blank if he was going to do the job or not. Magically, he now says he is unable to do the job as it involves partial street working. That was more than obvious in the photos. Honestly. Don’t bother. Wasted a couple of weeks waiting when I could have found someone reliable.

Plastering- 20 Jun 2026
Dan did a competent job hacking back damaged wall plaster to brickwork and established the extent of the damage caused by ingress of damp. He set to work and repaired the plaster, let it dry and then repainted the bay window to make the job look tidy and the surface uniform. Outside, Dan attended to cracked pebble dash finish to seal it and then repainted. He finally fixed a broken section of gutter to ensure any water is shed away from the outside wall. A neat and tidy piece of work that met the brief and we are happy with. Thanks Dan. At all times Dan was polite and helpful. He explained what he was going to do and then proceeded without hesitation to do just that. The only hesitation we had was that there was an unfortunate series of stops and starts in the work meaning that a 4 day job stretched to 6 days in total. Dan did communicate to let us know when he wouldn’t be able to attend the site so we coped but a client who was less flexible might have become frustrated over delays.

Expertise in most tasks, familiar with many others on a construction site and in house repairs. He has worked as a handyman and builder for me various times during the course of three years. At various times he has shown commitment to getting jobs completed with rapid schedules. He is organised. My experience is that it's best to talk through tasks clearly first. Discus how you want a job to be, sonetimes Damien generated good plans and better ideas than were originally thought. He did many different tasks. If he doesn't know how to do something, then he will say and gain help from local friends. He worked one day with one of the most established electricians in the bay for a day as an electricians mate. The comment made to me at the end of the day by the electrician was that Damiens work had been excellent.

Neil is excellent in what he does. He's a man of perfection never gives in. My wall was a nightmare as regards to getting the very expensive paint to stick to the wall (suspect the plaster ), Neil wouldn't give up though and he kept going until the job was complete. I'm going to have him again next year to do my landing and stairs. I would definitely recommend Neil.

Questions to ask a Torquay painter and decorator

Choosing a Torquay painter and decorator isn’t just about finding someone who can apply a coat of paint. It’s about working with someone who genuinely cares about how your home looks and feels. Here are some questions to help you make the right choice:

What types of projects have you completed in Torquay?

From period terraces and cottage interiors to modern flats, each property in Torquay has its own character. Ask your painter or decorator about their experience with homes similar to yours, and what finishes or materials they recommend for your walls or woodwork.

Can you share photos or examples of your recent work?

Before-and-after images give you a sense of their style, attention to detail, and how they approach surfaces or colours. Many painters and decorators feature their work on MyBuilder, so it’s easy to browse through and see what inspires you.

Do you have references from past clients in Torquay?

Hearing how others describe their workmanship, communication, and reliability can make your decision easier. You can also check reviews on MyBuilder to see how previous customers felt about their results.

How do you prepare surfaces and deal with cracks or damp patches?

Proper prep makes all the difference. A good decorator will explain how they handle imperfections before painting to ensure your new finish lasts.

Are you familiar with local rules for decorating listed or conservation buildings in Torquay?

Decorating listed buildings in Torquay sometimes needs formal consent to protect architectural significance. Knowing how to navigate these regulations and whether specific materials or colours are required can make a big difference in avoiding fines or costly rework.

FAQ: Common questions about Torquay painting and decorating services

How long does a typical painting and decorating project take in Torquay?

Project length varies with the size and nature of the work. A single room might take a few days, while larger jobs like whole-house decorating or detailed woodwork can take several weeks. Factors like surface preparation, drying times, and weather conditions for exterior work also affect the schedule.

What kind of paint or finishes are suitable for Torquay homes?

In Torquay, common choices include matte and eggshell finishes for interiors due to their elegant look and ease of touch-ups. For exterior surfaces, weather-resistant paints that cope with the local climate, such as moisture and temperature changes, are essential for lasting protection.

How do decorators prepare surfaces in older or period homes in Torquay?

Surface preparation in Torquay may involve cleaning, filling cracks, sanding, and sometimes treating issues like dampness. Proper prep is key to paint adhesion and finish durability, especially in homes with plaster, lath walls, or older wood.

Will painters and decorators in Torquay help with colour selection or test samples?

Many decorators offer guidance on colour choices based on lighting and room use and can provide sample swatches or test patches to help you visualise the final look before commitment.
