FAQ: Common Questions Readers Ask About Roof Insulation Costs and Benefits

Is there a noticeable difference in temperature regulation with proper roof insulation?

Yes, proper roof insulation greatly improves temperature regulation by reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. It helps maintain more stable indoor temperatures, minimises draughts, and enhances overall comfort. This often leads to lower energy bills and a reduced environmental impact.

What are the common challenges encountered during the roof insulation process?

Typical challenges include restricted access in tight or awkward spaces, moisture and ventilation problems that may lead to mould, and the removal of old insulation materials. Choosing the right insulation for your roof type and ensuring correct installation can help avoid these issues.

What maintenance considerations should I keep in mind to extend the life of my roof insulation?

Maintenance should include checking for leaks or damp, ensuring adequate ventilation, and confirming the insulation remains evenly spread and undisturbed. Regular professional inspections can catch problems early and help maintain the insulation’s effectiveness over time.

Suspended wooden floor insulation advice prior to posting a job

Andy Nisbet 31/07/2026 - 9.24 AM

Hi, I'm looking at getting approx (I think) about 30sqm. of varnished tongue groove floorboards (across 2 living rooms and a hall) insulated in a 30s semi in Trafford/M16. I believe it has limited crawl space (can check space and exact room dimensions once get vacant possession end of August) so would need lifting and insulating from above and refitting lifted floorboards as final floor finish. Might need some more airbricks? How should insulation be done for EPC validation etc? vapour/breathable layers/insulation type/thickness requirements, and what details might be required to get an accurate price range, plus any tips on what I should ask a prospective builder/contractor? Thanks, Andy

Thin internal wall insulation

Philippa Lewis 20/07/2026 - 1.52 PM

I am interested in retrofitting thin internal wall insulation (e.g. ISO-therm) in a ground floor flat, which has solid walls and is currently not well insulated. I understand TIWI is applied directly on top of existing plaster (assuming plaster is dry and in reasonable condition) with an adhesive - then skimmed over the top. Hoping for some suggestions on how to find an approved/experienced TIWI fitter - and at a more basic level - if this would generally be an 'insulation' or a 'plastering' category of job. Thank you

External wall insulation

Anonymous user 23/06/2026 - 11.52 AM

it is semi-detached house built in 1920s; solid wall construction. approx 720 sq ft (according to estate agents). There is a lot of space all around the front, back and side of the house. The walls are quite cold, and I think are damp. Insulation is required. what insulation is more suitable/appropriate (rockwool? celatex? any other?) is one better than another? Is there an optimum time of year for it to be installed? (summer?) or does it not matter? presumably it has be dry weather?
