How much do damp surveyors cost?

Most damp surveyors don't charge an hourly rate. Instead, they will usually offer a fixed quote for their complete damp investigation.

As a rough guide, the average cost for a standard damp investigation is typically between £150 to £300.

What affects the cost of a damp survey?

  • Size of your property: Larger homes with multiple rooms take longer to thoroughly assess.

  • Type of report: A basic visual assessment will cost less than a highly detailed homebuyer report required by a mortgage lender.

  • Complexity: Extensive moisture issues or hard-to-reach areas may require a more in-depth damp investigation.

To find out exactly what your project will cost, simply request quotes from damp surveyors through MyBuilder. It's the easy way to get pricing tailored to your own home.

What to ask damp surveyors before hiring?

Before you decide which professional to hire, asking these useful questions can help you feel confident that they are the best fit for your damp investigation.

Are you an independent damp surveyor?

It is important to know if the damp surveyor provides impartial advice or if they are linked to a company that sells specific damp proofing products. An independent assessment focuses entirely on diagnosing the issue, meaning you get a true picture of the problem.

What qualifications do you hold?

Check if the damp surveyor holds recognised credentials, such as a CSRT (Certificated Surveyor in Remedial Treatment), which shows they have training. This helps to make sure your damp investigation is carried out to the right standard.

Can I see examples of your previous damp reports?

Ask to see a sample report so you know exactly what level of detail to expect once the damp investigation is complete. A good report should clearly outline the type of damp found, the root cause, and the treatment steps you need to take.

What equipment do you use during the survey?

Damp surveyors often use specialist tools to properly detect hidden moisture behind walls or under your floors. Ask if they use moisture meters, hygrometers, or thermal imaging cameras so you are getting a detailed review of your property.

Can you provide a clear, written quote?

Before the job begins, make sure you understand exactly what the damp surveyor is charging for. Ask for a written quote that outlines the cost of the damp investigation, the final report, and any additional fees, so you aren't caught out by any unexpected charges later.

If you know where the damp is coming from, you may be looking for someone to treat it instead. Take a look at our guide on hiring damp proofing specialists.

FAQs: Common questions about damp surveyors

Do I really need a damp surveyor?

If you are buying a new home or noticing persistent mould, hiring a damp surveyor is a smart choice. They possess the knowledge to differentiate between simple condensation and more severe structural issues like rising damp. This helps to treat the actual cause rather than just hiding the symptoms.

How long does a damp investigation take?

A typical damp investigation usually takes between one and three hours, depending on the size of your property. Your chosen damp surveyor will need access to all affected rooms, and potentially the exterior, to assess the situation fully. Larger homes or complex moisture issues may require a slightly longer visit.

Do damp surveyors cover commercial properties?

Yes, many damp surveyors assess both commercial and residential buildings. While residential surveys focus on homes, commercial damp investigations often deal with larger structures and different building materials.

Should I hire an independent damp surveyor or a damp proofing company?

Hiring an independent damp surveyor is usually a good choice if you are looking for unbiased advice. While damp proofers near you may offer a free survey, they also sell treatments and might recommend unnecessary work.

Can a damp surveyor help with a house purchase?

Yes, a damp surveyor can provide a detailed homebuyer report that outlines the extent of any damp problem and the costs to fix it. This report can help you to make an informed decision before completing your property purchase.
