Lawn Feeding: The Right Fertiliser at the Right Time

Lawn feeding is the single most impactful thing most homeowners can do to improve grass colour, and the one most frequently done incorrectly, either at the wrong time, with the wrong product, or at the wrong rate.

  • Nitrogen (N) drives green leaf growth. A lawn that's yellow despite adequate water almost always needs nitrogen.
  • Phosphorus (P) supports root development, important for establishing new grass or recovering stressed lawns.
  • Potassium (K) improves hardiness and disease resistance, particularly useful in autumn.

Spring Feed (March–May)

Cutting grass too short is the most widespread cause of stressed, yellowing lawns in the UK. The instinct is to cut short to reduce the frequency of mowing, but scalped grass loses its ability to photosynthesize efficiently, becomes drought-stressed more quickly, and leaves bare patches that weeds colonise.

The rule of thirds: Never cut more than one-third of the blade length in a single cut. Cutting deeply stressed grass by removing more than a third at once causes significant stress that takes weeks to recover from.

Recommended mowing heights:

  • Standard ornamental lawn: 25-35mm (approximately 1 inch)

If your lawn has grown long (during a period of no mowing), raise the blade height and remove only a third of the length, then mow again three to four days later to bring it to the desired height over several cuts.

Aerating a Compacted Lawn

Compacted soil restricts the oxygen exchange, water infiltration, and root penetration that grass needs to grow strongly. Lawns in high-traffic areas, on clay soils, or where children and pets regularly play are particularly susceptible.

  • Signs of compaction: Water pools on the surface rather than soaking in, the lawn feels hard and spongy underfoot, and moss is beginning to establish in areas of thinning grass.

  • Hollow tine aeration is the most effective method - a hollow tine aerator removes small plugs of soil, creating channels for air, water, and nutrients to penetrate. The cores left on the surface can be raked off or left to break down. This is best done in autumn, after the main growing season and before the ground hardens.

  • Solid tine spiking with a garden fork (pushing the fork in and levering slightly) improves surface drainage but doesn't remove compaction in the same way hollow tining does. It's a useful supplement between hollow tine treatments.

A thick thatch layer (above 1cm) restricts air and water reaching the roots, creates an environment where moss and disease thrive, and makes the lawn feel spongy.

Overseeding Thin and Patchy Areas

Process:

  1. Mow the existing lawn shorter than usual (approximately 20mm) and remove clippings
  2. Scarify or rake vigorously to expose the soil surface between grass plants
  3. Lightly loosen the soil surface in any completely bare patches
  4. Apply grass seed at the recommended overseeding rate (typically half the new lawn rate)
  5. Lightly rake the seed into contact with the soil surface
  6. Water gently to avoid washing seed away, and keep moist until germination

When to overseed: Late summer to early autumn (late August to mid-October) is the optimal window. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for germination, air temperatures are cooling, and the autumn rains typically arrive before long. Spring is the second-best option, though new seedlings will face summer drought before they're fully established.

Seed selection should match your existing grass type and growing conditions. For shaded areas, use a shade-tolerant mix. For high-traffic areas, use a hard-wearing rye grass blend. Moss Control

Identify the cause first:

  • Moss in shaded areas - improve drainage, accept reduced grass growth in deep shade and consider ground cover plants instead
