FAQ: Common Questions Readers Ask About Living Walls
Are there any challenges or drawbacks to consider before installing a living wall?
When installing a living wall, consider these challenges: Initial costs can be high due to specialised materials and systems. Living walls also require regular watering, pruning and fertilisation, which can be time-consuming and costly. Proper structural support is crucial, as not all walls can bear the weight of soil and plants. Dampness and mould issues may arise if the wall isn't waterproofed, potentially damaging the structure.
What types of plants are best suited for a living wall installation?
Hardy ferns, sedums and mosses are excellent choices for a living wall due to their resilience and low maintenance needs. Succulents like Echeveria or Crassula can provide vibrant colour with little moisture requirement. Herbs such as thyme, oregano, and chives are well-suited for sunny, exposed walls. For shaded areas, consider shade-loving plants like ferns or hostas.
Is it possible to install a living wall on my own, or should I hire a professional?
While it is possible to DIY a living wall, hiring a builder is often recommended, especially for larger installations. Builders have the knowledge to design systems that suit structural requirements and plant needs. They can also ensure proper irrigation and drainage, critical for preventing water damage and root rot. DIY enthusiasts might manage small-scale projects with ready-made kits, but tackling more complex setups requires significant time and effort.
What are the environmental benefits of having a living wall in urban settings?
Living walls offer significant environmental benefits in urban areas. They improve air quality by absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen, and some plants filter pollutants and dust. They help reduce the urban heat island effect by providing natural insulation, lowering energy consumption.
Living walls also support biodiversity, offering habitats for birds, insects, and wildlife. Additionally, they assist with stormwater management by absorbing rainwater, reducing runoff and flood risk. These benefits make living walls a sustainable element of urban living.
How long do living walls last?
With proper maintenance, living walls can last 10 to 15 years. The lifespan depends on the quality of the installation and ongoing care.

Chris 12/08/2026 - 7.58 AM
So I had a ground floor extension, the builder built the cavity walls with 100ml cavity, should have been 150. He still ordered a 150ml lintel so it overhanged slightly on one side and building control wont' sign it off. Any options other than rebuild the wall/replace the lintel?
