Cost of an Interior Designer: Breakdown of Fees and Average Costs
Understanding the cost of hiring an interior designer is essential for effective budgeting. Prices vary depending on the pricing model used, such as hourly rates, flat fees or a percentage of the total project cost.
Hourly Rates: Flexible Costs for Smaller Projects
Hourly rates suit smaller or straightforward projects. While flexible, total costs can vary based on the time required. For related costs, see our painter and decorator cost guide.
Flat Fees: Predictable for Defined Projects
Flat fees provide clearer cost expectations and work well for projects with a fixed scope. To compare, explore our guide on the cost to paint a room.
Percentage of Project Cost: Scaled to Scope
For larger or more complex projects, designers may charge 10% to 25% of the overall project cost. This approach ties the fee to the size and complexity of the job. For similar pricing models, see our guide on the cost to paint a house.

Average Cost of Interior Design Services: What to Expect
When hiring an interior designer, costs can vary based on the project's size, your location and the designer’s background. Being aware of these factors helps you budget more accurately.
Regional Variations: How Location Affects Interior Design Fees
Interior design fees are generally higher in metropolitan areas like London due to greater demand and higher living costs. For a better idea of local pricing, our guides, such as the cost of repainting ceilings, can be helpful.

Selecting Interior Design Services: Impact on Your Budget
The services you choose will directly impact your budget. Whether opting for a comprehensive design package or a limited consultation, understanding how each level of service affects costs is crucial.
Full-Service Interior Design: Comprehensive Solutions and Their Costs
Full-service interior design provides a complete package, including space planning, furniture selection and contractor management. While it offers a hassle-free process, it can cost between £5,000 and £20,000 or more, depending on the project size and complexity.
If you’re considering full-service design, it’s important to understand the role of various professionals involved, which you can learn more about in our article on what interior designers do.
Partial or Consulting-Only Services: Budget-Friendly Options
For a smaller budget, consulting services offer professional advice or tailored plans for you to implement. Starting at £50 per hour, this option allows flexibility and is ideal for those seeking guidance while maintaining control over the project.

Hidden Costs: Uncovering Extra Expenses in Interior Design
While the initial quote for interior design services may seem straightforward, additional costs can arise throughout the project. Being aware of these extra expenses ensures that you don't face unexpected financial strain.
- Cost of Materials: Standard materials may be included in the initial quote, but opting for high-end or custom materials can increase costs significantly.
- Labour for Custom Work: Customised furniture, fixtures or bespoke designs often require additional labour costs not covered in basic estimates.
- Adjustments After Initial Design: Changes made after the design has been finalised may result in extra charges, particularly for structural adjustments.
- Permits and Compliance Fees: Depending on the scope of the project, permits may be required, which can incur extra fees.
- Shipping and Handling Costs: If your design involves sourcing materials or furniture from abroad, shipping and handling costs can add up.
- Storage Fees: Projects involving new furniture or materials that require storage before installation could result in additional costs.

Block wall built on top of floor boards
J.A 15/09/2026 - 10.18 AM
Hi, I have just bought a 1930s bungalow. I found a rotten joist under the bath that needs replacing but noticed the block wall next to the joist is only laid on floorboards. I need to cut the floorboards to change the joist but worried the wall will fall down. Has anyone came across this before and have any suggestions how to change the joist and support the wall?

Issues with sage 4 and wondering how to proceed with stage 5
sali 10/09/2026 - 4.21 PM
hi, we've been having issues with our architect and are thinking we might be better taking on stage 5 riba without them. we are doing a ground floor extension with some changes to internal walls/bathrooms. we have gotten to the stage where we have tender documents now and have been trying to understand the regulations on line with respect to getting sign off from a principle designer as part of building completion. some sites say that an experienced builder can provide this, others say that it needs to be someone specifically qualified. im not really sure if we end up parting way with this architect if we will end up needing to pay out for a new architect to take over and provide that sign off. also, i'm not sure if the expectation would be that the building company could/should continue conversations with structural engineer/building control/party wall surveyor or if we'd have to do that. sorry if the questions are a bit haphazard or dont make sense! new to this all. i'm also not sure if i'm thinking about/asking the right questions or if there are other things i should also be asking or considering! thank you very much for any advice and suggestions in advance!
