How Sliding Doors Work

Sliding doors, sometimes called sliding patio doors or sliding glass doors, consist of one or more large glass panels that move horizontally along a fixed track. In a two-panel system, one panel is typically fixed and the other slides. In a three or four-panel system, panels can slide and stack behind each other or behind a fixed panel.

The key characteristic of sliding doors is the large, uninterrupted glass panels. Because the panels don't need to fold, they can be significantly larger than bifold door leaves - panes of 2 metres wide or more are achievable with structural glass, which bifold systems can't match.

The frames can be made extremely slim, with modern aluminium sliding systems achieving interlock widths (the meeting point between panels) of 20-35mm. This produces a view through the glass that, when the doors are closed, has minimal interruption from framing.

The limitation is the opening itself. In a two-panel sliding system, the door can only open to approximately 50% of the total width, since one panel parks behind the other. Multi-panel systems open further but never to the same clear span as a bifold system of equivalent width.

How Bifold Doors Work

Bifold doors consist of multiple panels connected by hinges, running along a top or bottom track. When opened, the panels fold against each other accordion-style and stack to one or both sides of the opening. The result is a clear, almost completely unobstructed opening across the full width of the frame.

A bifold system can achieve up to 90–95% of the total opening width as clear, walkable space - compared with 50% (or less) for a standard two-panel sliding system. This is bifolds' defining advantage: when fully open, they produce a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor space that sliding doors simply can't match.

The trade-off is what you see when the doors are closed. Because bifold systems use multiple panels, each with its own frame, the frames create a repeating vertical pattern across the opening. On a 3.6 metre opening with six panels, for example, you'll have five visible vertical frame members when the doors are closed. This interrupts the view more than a two-panel sliding system of equivalent width.

The single most important functional difference between the two types is how much of the opening becomes walkable clear space when the doors are open.

  • Bifold doors open to 90–95% of the total frame width. On a 4-metre opening, that's approximately 3.6–3.8 metres of clear, unobstructed threshold. You can move furniture, serve food outdoors, and generally treat the indoor and outdoor space as one.

  • Sliding doors open to 50% of the total frame width in a standard two-panel system. On the same 4-metre opening, only 2 metres is usable clear space. Multi-track sliding systems (where panels stack in layers) can open further, but at the cost of added frame depth and complexity.

The practical implication: if opening the space fully - for entertaining, for parties, for a genuine indoor-outdoor flow in summer - is the primary goal, bifold doors deliver this and sliding doors don't, regardless of cost or quality. This is the clearest case for bifolds.

Sightlines and Views: Sliding Doors vs Bifold

When closed, the picture reverses. Sliding doors produce a significantly better view through to the garden than bifolds.

A modern aluminium sliding door can achieve an interlock width (the central meeting point between panels) of 20-35mm. The frame around the perimeter of the opening adds further, but a good sliding system closed is a predominantly glass wall with minimal interruption.

A bifold system with six panels on a similar opening has five visible vertical frame members, each typically 80-120mm wide. This adds up to 400-600mm of opaque vertical interruption across the view. The impact varies by how large the opening is - on a very wide opening (5+ metres), the individual frame members are less dominant. On a narrower opening (2–3 metres), the frame-to-glass ratio tilts more noticeably toward the frames.

  • The honest framing: The UK climate means these doors are closed for most of the year. If views, natural light in winter, and year-round enjoyment of the garden outlook are the priority, sliding doors win on this metric - consistently, and by a meaningful margin. This point alone shifts the recommendation for many homeowners who use the doors year-round.

Space Requirements: Sliding vs Bifold Doors

Both types require planning around their physical footprint when in use. Bifolds can fold outward (into the garden) or inward (into the room). Outward folding is more common for external doors as it doesn't reduce internal floor space, but requires external clearance.

  • Sliding doors don't project into the room when open. The panels park along the track beside the opening. They also don't project outward. This makes them suitable for rooms where you can't afford to lose floor space beside the opening, and for openings where the external patio or garden area is limited.

  • Bifold doors require clear space to stack the folded panels. On a right-hand-stacking configuration, the panels fold and park against the right-hand side of the opening - you need 400-600mm of clear wall space (or external space) to accommodate the stacked leaves, depending on how many panels are in the system. Weather Performance and Sealing

Both types will spend the majority of their life closed - that's the reality of the UK climate. How well each system seals against wind and rain when closed is therefore more relevant to day-to-day performance than how wide they open in summer.

  • Bifold doors with a rebated outer frame close tightly onto rubber gaskets around the perimeter, producing good weather sealing. The limitation is the joints between panels - each hinge point is a potential gap. Quality bifold systems seal these joints well, but the more panels a system has, the more potential sealing points there are to manage. Low-threshold bifold designs (which achieve a flush internal-external floor finish) sacrifice some weather resistance for accessibility.

  • Sliding doors typically use brush seals that run along the track to allow smooth sliding movement. These provide reasonable weather resistance but are generally considered less airtight than the gasket sealing on a quality rebated bifold system. Modern sliding patio doors have improved significantly in this regard, and premium systems perform well - but the sliding mechanism inherently requires more tolerance at the seal than a fixed, closed bifold leaf.

In highly exposed locations - coastal properties, elevated positions, or homes that take the prevailing wind directly - a quality rebated bifold tends to offer marginally better weather resistance than an equivalent sliding system.

Security: Bifold Doors vs Sliding Doors

Both types can be specified with good security hardware, but the mechanisms are different.

  • Bifold doors typically have multiple locking points along the edges of the outer leaves and at the hinges, engaging with the frame. This distributed locking, multiple points along the door edge, makes forced entry by leveraging the frame edges more difficult.

  • Sliding doors typically lock with two or three locking points where the panels meet in the centre. Some premium systems add additional locking points along the track. The large glass panels are the main physical vulnerability, tempered safety glass is standard, and laminated glass offers better resistance to impact, but a glass-heavy door system is always a different proposition from a solid door.

For both types, the quality of the hardware specification matters more than the door type itself. Multi-point locking and laminated glass on either system provides adequate domestic security. For high-security requirements, consult the manufacturer's specification rather than making assumptions based on door type.

When Sliding Doors Are the Right Choice

Choose sliding doors when:

  • Views and natural light year-round are the priority. If you want to look out at the garden in December as much as in August, the slim sightlines of a quality sliding system deliver this better than bifolds.

  • The opening is on the narrower side (under 3 metres). The frame interruption from multiple bifold leaves is more pronounced on narrower openings. A two-panel sliding system on a 2.4-metre opening is cleaner visually.

  • Internal floor space beside the opening is limited. Sliding panels park along the track without projecting into the room - bifold panels need stacking space.

  • A fully open connection to the garden is not a priority. If the doors are primarily there to let in light and frame a view, with occasional opening for ventilation, sliding is the more appropriate system.

When Bifold Doors Are the Right Choice

Choose bifold doors when:

  • Opening the space fully is the primary goal. For entertaining, for a genuine indoor-outdoor connection in summer, for a clear flow between kitchen and garden - bifolds deliver an opening size that sliding doors can't match.

  • The opening is wide (3 metres or more). On a large opening, the clear span of a fully open bifold is transformative. The frame interruption when closed is also less dominant relative to the overall glass area on a wider opening.

  • Corner configurations or atypical openings are needed. Bifold systems can be configured around corners, with traffic doors in various positions, folding in or out, they are considerably more configurable than sliding systems.

A level threshold is important for accessibility. Bifold systems with low-threshold designs achieve a flush internal-to-external floor finish that's easier for mobility and for moving furniture in and out.
