Replacement UPVC window handle/lock

Trevor Collins 13/10/2026 - 8.12 AM

I have a window that opens fully at the side or alternatively, it can tilt open partially at the top. The handle moves to the 3 o'clock position to open at the top and moves to 12 o'clock to open fully on the side hinge. At the moment the window is closed and the push button will not push in. The handle tuns round fully with no response and the window is locked at the bottom but the lock at the top does not seem to be engaged. Does this require just a handle replacement, or will it require a new locking mechanism?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Honestly you'll need a site visit to manipulate open the window and investigate what's causing the issue. Either the handle has snapped at the back or the mechanism has failed.

This likely a gearbox failure, which is what the handle connects to. These are a wide variety and would need removing, measuring and any numbers taking down in order to get the correct component for replacement. A replacement is likely available nearby or next day though

Hi, this could be caused by a faulty handle or a problem with the internal locking mechanism. Before replacing anything, I would suggest checking whether the handle spindle is damaged or disconnected from the gearbox. If the handle spins freely without operating the locking points, the gearbox or the internal mechanism may be faulty rather than just the handle. If possible, check the handle fixing screws and see whether the spindle engages properly with the mechanism. Avoid forcing the handle, as this could cause further damage. The exact cause would need to be confirmed, but based on your description, I would suspect the gearbox or locking mechanism as well as the handle. Best, Iman BuilderFix
