After 30mins visiting our property, no drains were unblocked, and the main manhole in the basement was not opened to assess any issues within. His follow-on quote for works were above £1k which seemed unreasonable. When i tried to explain that £140 seemed unreasonable for time spent without unblocking anything, he threatened an admin fee and daily interest if i didn't pay. Obviously not worth that hassle so i paid in full, but very disappointing that tradesmen continue to get away with this behaviour.Answer from tradesperson:
The £140 charge was agreed in advance for a drain unblock / investigation. While no physical blockage was cleared, an investigation was fully carried out, including use of specialist equipment (CCTV drainage camera) to assess the system. That is chargeable work regardless of whether a blockage is ultimately found. The purpose of the visit was to identify the cause of the odour issue, which we did. The findings showed: • An unsealed and incorrectly installed inspection chamber frame and lid inside the basement, which is allowing foul air to escape. • The frame and lid have been filled and sealed with expanding foam, which is not suitable for drainage installations and does not provide an airtight or compliant seal. • Scale and debris build-up within the earthenware drainage run serving the washing machine waste, requiring jetting and a post-clean CCTV inspection.

The plumber responded very quickly and arrived right on time. He fixed both problems completely and efficiently. Very friendly, with great communication throughout.
