Fred's quote to reset all the ridge tiles on my garage and single story extension was accepted and he and a mate turned up on 11/03/2019 to do the work. After a couple of hours of Fred coming and going, leaving the mate on his own, Fred announced that his mother had been taken ill and they would have to leave. On inspecting the work that had been done, the tiles that had been reset were very uneven and surplus mortar left all over the tiles and the slates. The unevenness was not surprising since Fred's mate had not even used a straight edge let alone a spirit level
After much chasing, two guys turned up 05/04/2019 to complete the work, one of which was Fred's son and when I asked how Fred's mother was he said he did not know she had been ill!
They corrected the uneven ridge tiles to some extent and removed some of the excess mortar but said they had been told to only reset ridge tiles that were loose and just re-point the rest. During the process they managed to break 4 slates by walking on the roof without a roof ladder. These they replaced.
After they left I found another broken slate and some water penetration where the ridge tiles had just been re-pointed. Despite chasing, to date Fred has not returned to put things right.
I have to admit that Fred's price was half that of the next lowest quote so if you want the job done properly pay someone else a bit more.
