Cost Overview: What Does Core Drilling Cost?
For a standard overview of costs, the average core drilling expenses range from £26 for smaller holes to £116 for larger ones. These costs may include labour and material charges, making it important to evaluate the specific needs of your construction activity.
Diamond core drilling can also be a consideration, especially for tougher materials like reinforced concrete, which may increase the cost due to its precision and durability.
| Cost Factor | Average Cost |
|---|---|
| Core Drilling (52mm hole) | £26-£35 |
| Core Drilling (127mm hole) | £29-£36 |
| Core Drilling (152mm hole) | £37-£46 |
| Core Drilling (300mm hole) | £86-£116 |
| Diamond Core Drilling | Typically £80+ per hole depending on size and material |

What Influences Core Drilling Costs?
Several key factors determine the final cost per hole:
- Diameter of the hole: Larger holes require more labour and equipment, raising costs.
- Material being drilled: Harder materials like reinforced concrete are more expensive to drill through.
- Location of the project: Regional labour rates and accessibility can impact pricing.
- Quantity of holes: Drilling multiple holes often reduces the per-hole price due to economies of scale.
Professional Core Drilling Services: Hiring and Costs
Hiring professional services helps ensure precision and safety during drilling tasks. The cost for a two-person team can be around £540 per day, covering both labour and materials. This is especially practical for multiple holes or larger diameters.
- Labour: Typically calculated per hour with prices ranging from £20 for basic tasks to £50 for more complex drilling scenarios.
- Materials: Depending on the scope, necessary materials can contribute £140 per day to the total cost.
Services provided by core drilling companies often include:
- Site Assessment: Evaluating the site for safe and efficient drilling operations.
- Project Planning: Detailed planning to ensure all client requirements and safety protocols are met.
- Executing Drilling Tasks: Skilled execution of drilling, ensuring minimal disturbance to the existing structure and surrounding environment.
- Debris Removal: Efficient removal of debris and clean-up post-drilling to maintain site cleanliness.

FAQ: Common Questions Readers Ask About Core Drilling
What are the potential benefits of using diamond core drills for concrete projects?
Diamond core drills provide high precision, making them ideal for creating exact holes with minimal disruption. This is crucial in sensitive environments like hospitals, where structural integrity is important. The process is quiet and minimally disruptive, perfect for noise-sensitive areas. These drills are versatile, capable of handling reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, stone, and other hard materials. Additionally, using water as a lubricant reduces dust, ensuring a cleaner and safer worksite.
What are common challenges faced in core drilling operations and how can they impact costs?
Core drilling operations face challenges like equipment wear, unexpected obstructions and operator skill. Abrasive materials can degrade drill bits, raising maintenance costs. Encountering rebars or other obstructions can cause delays and extra expenses. Additionally, the operator's skill affects efficiency — poor technique can lead to more wear and slower progress. These factors all contribute to the overall cost of the project, highlighting the need for personnel with suitable experience and well-maintained equipment.
What should I consider when looking for diamond drilling services in my area?
When choosing diamond drilling services, consider the company's background and reputation, ensuring they have positive feedback. Verify they hold the necessary certifications and licences. Check if they use modern, well-maintained equipment suited to your project. Ensure they follow strong health and safety protocols. Finally, compare quotes and timelines to get a competitive rate without compromising quality.

Do I need rebar/wire for concrete slab?
Ria Dobbie 20/07/2026 - 8.09 AM
We have removed a full peice of concrete slab out of the centre of a floor area (external) down to the mud. We’ve refilled with a few inches of hardcore as it was a raised floor area, and now are ready to refill with repair concrete (using SIKa LA repair concrete). . The rest of the floor did not have rebar/mesh was just created with concrete that had a lot of pebbles in. Can the repair concrete we have be used straight on top of the hardcore and adhere to the sides where the slab was cut out, or do we need to prepare the base of the area differently? Any advice would be gratefully received :)
