Small wooden garage foundation/base
Allan MacPhee 13/10/2026 - 2.12 PM
Hi, I'm replacing an existing timber garage, 2.5m x 5.5m, with a new timber garage. The current garage foundations don't look very substantial, suspect it's just some form of hardcore around the perimeter, as it has a wooden floor and I can see there is soil underneath. Would a 100mm hardcore/100mm concrete trench around the edge of the building be ok for a foundation? How wide would the trench have to be? I want a wooden floor so don't see the point in a full concrete slab. It's not going to have cars in it, purely for storage etc. Thanks.

Personally with the weight and size of the structure, I’d want 250mm of type 1, compacted at 50mm stages and 150mm of concrete on top of this. The trenches I would make would be 2-2.5x the width of the wall structure you intend to place on top of them.

I would dig down till I found suitable ground conditions then excavat 450mm or 600mm wide strip foundation and cut over site level to the required level pour concrete foundation then lay blocks with d.p.c to keep your timber off the ground and protected form damp then install geotextile taram and 150mm crush concrete and 50mm type 1 compacted in layers on the over site you will consider drainage aswell .
