Resin Bonded vs. Resin Bound Drives: What’s the Difference?
When considering a resin driveway, it's essential to understand the differences between resin bonded and resin bound surfaces.
Resin bonded driveways involve scattering decorative stones onto a layer of resin to form a textured surface.
In contrast, a bound resin driveway completely mixes resin with aggregate before laying, creating a smooth finish.
Here’s a complete table of differences between the two to aid your decision:
| Feature | Resin Bonded | Resin Bound |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Texture | Textured | Smooth |
| Permeability | Non-permeable | Permeable |
| Application | Resin layer with scattered stones | Mixed resin and aggregate layer |
| Ideal Use | High-friction needs | Areas requiring drainage |
| Appearance | Natural stone look | Customisable designs |
Advantages of Installing a Resin Gravel Driveway

A resin gravel driveway binds natural aggregates (gravel or stone) with a strong, clear resin, and offers an appealing choice for homeowners. Its permeability ensures efficient drainage, effectively reducing water pooling after rainfalls. Furthermore, these driveways are noted for their durability, making them suitable for high-traffic areas and ensuring they withstand various weather conditions.
- Low Maintenance: Resin gravel driveways require minimal upkeep, saving you time and effort in the long run.
- Aesthetic Appeal: With a variety of colours and textures to choose from, they can enhance the visual appeal of your property.
- Eco-Friendly: Made with natural aggregates, resin gravel is an environmentally conscious choice that contributes to a sustainable ecosystem.
- Permeability: Resin gravel driveways allow water to drain through the surface, reducing puddles and preventing flooding.
- Durability: They are tough and long-lasting, capable of withstanding heavy traffic and various weather conditions.
Note: While it is possible for experienced DIYers to lay a resin gravel driveway themselves, the process is quite technical and time-sensitive. For the best results and to avoid costly mistakes, hiring a professional tradesperson is highly recommended.

Installation Process of a Bound Resin Driveway
Installing a bound resin driveway involves a detailed process that requires preparation and precision.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a successful installation:
-
Prepare the Base: Start by establishing a solid foundation. This involves excavating the area to the necessary depth and ensuring the base is stable and suitable for the resin driveway.
-
Lay the Sub-Base: Spread a sub-base layer, typically consisting of MOT Type 1 or Type 3 aggregate, and compact it thoroughly. This step is crucial for the stability and longevity of your driveway.
-
Install the Edging: Secure the boundaries of your driveway with an edging solution, using materials like brick or stone to define the edges and prevent the resin-bound mix from spilling over.
-
Mix the Resin and Aggregate: Combine the resin with decorative aggregates, ensuring a uniform coating. This mix will provide a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
-
Pour and Spread: Carefully pour the mixture over the prepared base, using a rake or trowel to level it evenly. The application should be seamless and cover all areas entirely.
-
Smooth the Surface: Use a float to ensure the surface is smooth and free of any bumps or undulations. Patience and precision are key to achieving a professional finish.
-
Allow the Resin to Cure: Let the resin-bound surface cure properly, usually taking between 24 to 48 hours, depending on weather conditions. During this time, restrict access to ensure an undisturbed setting.

- After significant spills, clean immediately to avoid permanent stains. Be sure to use appropriate cleaning agents to protect the surface.
- Regularly check for signs of wear, such as cracks or loose stones, particularly in high-traffic areas, and repair promptly to prevent further damage. Discover average driveway repair costs for your budget.

FAQ: Common Questions Readers Ask About Resin Driveways
How is a resin driveway different from other types of driveways?
Resin driveways are constructed using a mix of aggregate stones and resin. They differ from other types of driveways like asphalt or concrete in terms of aesthetics, permeability, and maintenance. Resin driveways offer a smooth, decorative finish and are available in various colours and textures. They are also permeable, allowing water to drain through the surface and reducing the risk of flooding.
How does a resin driveway compare in terms of durability to traditional paving options?
In terms of durability, resin driveways are comparable to traditional paving options like concrete or asphalt. The UV-resistant properties of the resin help prevent fading, and the surface is resistant to oil spills and weeds. However, while resin driveways are robust, heavy loads or sharp objects can cause damage over time, which might not be as prevalent in more traditional surfaces like concrete.
What is the lifespan of a resin driveway?
A resin driveway typically has a lifespan of 10 to 25 years, depending on the quality of materials used and the level of maintenance provided. Factors such as the type of aggregate, the resin quality, and the local climate can influence its longevity. Proper installation and regular cleaning can help maximise its lifespan.
How long until you can walk on a resin driveway?
After installation, a resin driveway can usually be walked on within 4 to 6 hours. However, it is recommended to wait at least 24 hours before driving on it to ensure the resin has fully cured and set properly.
What are the pitfalls of resin driveways?
Despite their many advantages, resin driveways have some potential pitfalls, including initial cost, as they can be more expensive upfront compared to alternatives like gravel. Poor installation can lead to issues like cracking or uneven surfaces. Additionally, exposure to certain chemicals or excessive weight can cause damage, and they may need occasional maintenance to keep their appearance and permeability intact.
How does the drainage system work for a resin bond driveway?
A resin bond driveway uses a non-permeable system where the aggregate is laid on top of a pre-existing non-porous surface. While not naturally permeable, the existing surface should include drainage routes to manage water effectively. In contrast, a resin-bound system allows water to pass through the surface to a porous sub-base, effectively managing water runoff.
Does a resin driveway increase house value?
Having a resin driveway can potentially increase the value of your home, as it provides a modern, attractive aesthetic that enhances curb appeal. Additionally, the durability and low maintenance required are appealing features for potential buyers, making the property more desirable.
Do resin driveways need resealing?
Unlike some other types of driveways, resin driveways do not require regular resealing. However, they do benefit from occasional cleaning to remove dirt and debris, which helps maintain their appearance and permeability. In exceptional cases, if the surface becomes worn or damaged, resealing might be necessary.
Are resin driveways slippery in winter?
Resin driveways are generally less slippery than traditional paving options because of their textured finish. However, during icy conditions in winter, they can become slippery like any other surface. It is advisable to use non-corrosive de-icing solutions to maintain safety without damaging the driveway.

Hardcore advice (no pun intended)
Stuart Dempster 02/09/2026 - 3.22 PM
Hi, so I'm laying a two track driveway in my garden, two 500mm tracks each 4m long. I've dug down 20cm. Compacted soil by stomping many many times. Laid woven heavy duty porous membrane. 10-15cm of mot type 1. I'm then doing approx 2cm sharp sand followed by interlocking plastic grids, filled with 8-15mm pebbles. My question is, I dont have a compactor for the type one short of size 9 steal cap boots stomping and some 30kg rubble sacks thumped down. It wont be used every night, just if I have no space nearby. Will it be ok or will grids sink? Really dont want to hire compactor (neighbour noise issues already). Cheers

Tarmac issues
Anonymous user 18/08/2026 - 8.44 AM
We had our tarmac drive laid in October 2025. We now have an issue where the driveway appears to be running as through the tarmac is bleeding. The installers says it’s from the heat and where we park our cars. Their solution is to tarmac seal. I can’t attach pictures but does anyone have a clue why this is happening and if tarmac seal is the solution.
