Cheap Driveway Ideas: What Is Block Paving and Why Choose It?

Block paving is a widely used option when exploring cheap driveway ideas in the UK. It involves laying individual bricks or blocks in various patterns, offering visual appeal alongside practical benefits. When compared with other inexpensive driveway options, block paving stands out for its adaptability and long-term value. A key reason homeowners choose block paving is its balance of cost and quality. While not always the absolute cheapest driveway material, it can be one of the most cost effective driveway choices over time due to its durability, ease of repair, and visual flexibility. For those on a budget, it's also possible to choose more economical materials or simpler patterns to cut down on overall spend.
Hiring a builder or driveway installer is often recommended, as poor installation can lead to long-term maintenance costs that outweigh initial savings. You might also want to explore our driveway gravel cost guide for more material comparisons.
Choosing the Right Block Paving for Inexpensive Driveway Ideas
Selecting the right type of block paving is essential when looking for budget driveway ideas.
Here are key factors to consider when choosing driveway ideas using block paving:
- Climate suitability: Choose materials that handle freeze-thaw cycles well if you live in colder areas.
- Design compatibility: Opt for styles that match your home while keeping the layout simple to save on installation costs.
- Functionality: Consider usage patterns. For heavier vehicles, stronger materials and deeper sub-bases are essential.
Builders or driveway installers can also advise on inexpensive driveway materials and ensure that your design meets both aesthetic and regulatory requirements. To compare block paving to other popular materials, read this guide on tarmac driveway costs.

Avoid These Mistakes When Creating Cheap Driveways with Block Paving
If you're considering the cheapest driveway options or DIY cheap driveway ideas, it’s important to be aware of common pitfalls that can undermine your efforts.
The following mistakes can lead to higher costs and reduced durability:
- Inadequate excavation: Skimping on depth can cause drainage and stability issues.
- Skipping a proper sub-base: A solid base is essential to prevent movement or sinking.
- Poor compaction: Without this, the surface may become uneven over time.
- Incorrect jointing material: Using subpar materials can erode and weaken the structure.
- Neglecting edge restraints: Without proper edges, blocks can shift due to traffic or weather.

Hardcore advice (no pun intended)
Stuart Dempster 02/09/2026 - 3.22 PM
Hi, so I'm laying a two track driveway in my garden, two 500mm tracks each 4m long. I've dug down 20cm. Compacted soil by stomping many many times. Laid woven heavy duty porous membrane. 10-15cm of mot type 1. I'm then doing approx 2cm sharp sand followed by interlocking plastic grids, filled with 8-15mm pebbles. My question is, I dont have a compactor for the type one short of size 9 steal cap boots stomping and some 30kg rubble sacks thumped down. It wont be used every night, just if I have no space nearby. Will it be ok or will grids sink? Really dont want to hire compactor (neighbour noise issues already). Cheers

Tarmac issues
Anonymous user 18/08/2026 - 8.44 AM
We had our tarmac drive laid in October 2025. We now have an issue where the driveway appears to be running as through the tarmac is bleeding. The installers says it’s from the heat and where we park our cars. Their solution is to tarmac seal. I can’t attach pictures but does anyone have a clue why this is happening and if tarmac seal is the solution.
