Kitchen Fitting

Is a kitchen a kitchen if it doesnt have an oven/ hotplate?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

HI I thinking of moving the kitchen in my flat, and am looking at fitting a kitchenette or small galley type kitchen. I rarely use it for cooking, so was thinking about only having a washing machine, fridge, sink and the rest cupboards. I know there is a requirement to have ventilation in a kitchen, but if it doesn't have an oven/ hotplate does this requirement disappear? I was thinking of getting a mini oven (small electric appliance that can be moved) with hotplates as a solution when i do need a hotplate/ oven. thanks Chris

A kitchen by definition is a room for cooking food. If you do not have a means of cooking then it is not a kitchen. A hot plate is a means of cooking whilst a washing machine is not. I hope that this answers your question.

A fan for ventilation is not required provided you have an openable window as stated in approved document F of building regulations. Regards Kevin
