Restoration & Refurbishment

Can we start our restoration upstairs first?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

We are moving into a house that although sound requires heavy decoration/ light refurb. The upstairs configuration will not be changed although both bathrooms will be re-fitted. I plan to to as much work as possible myself (although may get a builder to do one of the bathrooms to see how they tackle challenges that I may come across in bathroom 2;-)) The big questions and really messy stuff come from the downstairs. We would like to live in the house for a year to see how/what we want to do to it. But during that time do all the required work and decoration upstairs inc carpets. Depending on our love for the house and area the downstairs may include a kitchen extension. But at the very least walls will be moved, radiators moved, additional electrics, down lights etc. I'll be getting the pros in for the downstairs. If we were to extend the single story extension roof would meet the house on the external wall of the two upstairs bathrooms. Will I have to undo my hard work in the bathrooms? Its a wooden framed 1970's house, yes I know the horror stories, but its a good one! If we go for the cheaper option at the very least down lights will be fitted in the downstairs ceiling under these bathrooms. Again will the electrician want to undo my hard work? Any other issues you guys can think of by starting upstairs? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Not really , it may be a bit more difficult to do the downstairs work with new carpets etc fitted upstairs but apart from the inevitable dust there should be no problem that can't be solved. It is a good idea to live in it a year before you carry out major alterations , so what extra cost involved with doing the two floors as seperate contracts should be recouped by hopefully only doing the work downstairs once. as it is timber framed just be extra careful on fireproofing etc. Good luck
