Carpet over laminate?
simon 05/11/2026 - 8.03 AM
I want carpet in lounge that currently has laminate. Had 2 experienced carpet fitters in. One strongly recommends fitting over the laminate because otherwise there will be large gaps under the skirting board which will look awful. The other strongly recommends I remove the laminate first otherwise there maybe problems. The laminate is 12mm, its underlay is 3mm, and give 1mm for gap to get it under, and that's a total of 16mm. If the carpet is 8mm and goes under the laminate, that's leaves an 8mm gap, which is huge. Any thoughts please?

It is normally recommended that you take up existing flooring because if it was to expand under carpet it could start to rise as it it is not fixed down causing the carpet to lift

I’d recommend removing the laminate before fitting the carpet.
Laminate is installed as a floating floor, so fixing carpet grippers through it can restrict its natural expansion and contraction.
The gap beneath the skirting - remember to account for both the carpet and the underlay, not just the carpet thickness. Depending on the products used, the finished floor height may be very similar to the existing laminate.
As a fitter myself I would not fit carpet over laminate.

If you take up the laminate you can build up the floor with 6mm plywood if the floor underneath is wood or do 4mm-5mm latex self leveling if the floor base is concrete once this is done you can use 8mm Underlay and the carpet and there should be no gaps

If laminate already built underneath skirting with no beading, then In my experience it’s ok to fit on top. The only issue would be cutting doors.
