Going from dark blue wall to dark green
Anonymous user 03/11/2026 - 1.51 PM
Hi, we've a dark blue wall that we want to change to dark green. Have been advised to use a grey undercoat over the blue to help block it out. We were sold dulux trade undercoat in grey but it says for use on wood/metal before high gloss paint. Is that ok as an undercoat? It's a Lick paint we intend to use. Many thanks.

Hi there. From dark blue to dark green absolutely no need for undercoat. Especially with lick as its a quality paint for coverage. So straight on with the green. Hope this helps. Kev merlin Decorators

Going from Dark Blue to Dark Green should not need a Mist Coat of anything. The Dark Green should cover in 2 coats, no problem, especially if it is a good quality Trade Paint. There is a possibility you may need to apply 3 coats of the Green, but if you use straight out of the tin, and dont 'knock it down' with water, 2 Full Coats should be fine.

Using your timber undercoat might work if it's water based, but it's going to be an expensive exercise! Return that paint and buy a standard matt emulsion in a similar grey. Then 2 coats top colour.
You could go blue to green quite easily I think, but might need 3 coats to get true colour( depending how generous you are with the paint) so just a question of what's most cost effective. Personally I'd go straight in with the green and save the faff!
Good luck!
