Fencing

Replacing hedge with a fence.

Anonymous user 02/11/2026 - 2.06 PM

We have a 2m laurel hedge that is wholly within our front boundary border and does not encroach onto our neighbours land/border. However this has been "butchered" by our neighbour (misguided belief it does encroach) to the point that it no longer provides real privacy as there are gaping holes in it. To resolve we wanted to replace with a fence to the same height. The wording in our Title deed of Transfer states....(referring to the front) ...keep all parts of the garden neat, tidy and to maintain in the position erected by the Transferor any Boundary structure (together with any garden hedge fence and wall not forming the boundary with and adjoining plot on the estate) in good condition repairing and renewed to their original specification as far as possible provided that where a hedge has been planted it will be maintained so as not to exceed 2m in height" My question would be as the hedge is 2m and permittable - can the fence be 2m? Many thanks

you'll need planning permission to install a new fence regardless of hedge height. The rules regarding front boundary fencing generally allow no more than 1m high for fencing.

Hi In the United Kingdom, the maximum height you can build a garden fence without needing planning permission depends on where the fence is located on your property: Rear and side gardens (away from a road): Up to 2 metres (approx. 6ft 6in). Next to a road, path, or pavement used by vehicles: Up to 1 metre (approx. 3ft 3in). This lower limit applies to front gardens or side boundaries that run directly alongside a highway to ensure drivers' visibility isn't blocked.

I would say yes a hedge and fence or a wall can be there without encroaching and no more that 2m high and kept tidy is how it reads to me
