Washing machine in a airing cupboard

Julia Lawrence 26/10/2026 - 8.29 AM

Hi Can I put a washing in a airing cupboard? Cupboard has an electric water heater as there is no gas in building. Kitchen has no space for a machine.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Julia, Thank you for your question. Installing a washing machine in an airing cupboard would require careful consideration, particularly as there is already an electric water heater installed. Several factors would need to be checked, including available space, ventilation, electrical safety, water supply, drainage and access for future maintenance. The water heater manufacturer's clearance requirements would also need to be considered. I would recommend having the cupboard assessed by a suitably qualified electrician and plumber before making any decisions. Without inspecting the existing arrangement, it wouldn't be appropriate to confirm whether the proposed installation is safe or suitable. I hope this helps. Yes you can do this providing it is enclosed and not excessively hot from the water heater
