Fencing

Am I allowed to install a fence

Lisa Fell 13/10/2026 - 8.12 AM

Our neighbour is driving me crazy. He insists part of our front garden is his despite it been infront of our property and used as ours for 20 years. He drags his bins down, cuts a strip of grass with his lawnmower and is a total nuisance. We have spent a fortune through a solicitor asking him to provide legal proof that the land is his but he continues to ignore. Are we allowed to put up a fence?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes as long as it is on your side of the property as he sounds like a nuisance. If you instal a fence on your property you are fine. If he decides to damage it or anything once the fence is up then you can get the police involved as it will be classed as criminal damage.

This question has various answers, can you put up a fence.. yes. BUT, if he does have a legal case for that land, which he’s yet to produce. You could either be giving him a free fence or be forced to remove/move it at your own cost. You can look on the land registry for free online to ascertain your boundary lines. Then erect a fence at this line. Ahead of the front elevation of the property the legal limit varies between 1-1.2m high, depending on where you are. In a rear garden or at the side of the house, the limit is 2m. Again depending on location
