Granny chargers
Mr P M Turner 12/10/2026 - 12.07 PM
I have a plug in hybrid car and I use a granny charger to charge it. The socket gets really hot abd I have to turn amps down to prevent sockets burning. Is it possible to have a socket that can be safely used for a granny charger at full ampage?

You can get sockets that are marked EV and they are designed so they can use a high load for extended periods of time. How often do you charge with the granny cable? They are really not supposed to be used for regular charging only for occasional top ups/emergencies. I know a lot do use them regularly but they generally lack a lot of safety features you get in dedicated chargers. The problem you might run into is the need for Type A RCD protection so if you don’t have that you may need that upgraded on this circuit at the very minimum due to a high DC load being connected. A competent electrician should be checking that amongst other things.
