Stripping lining paper that has been gloss painted

Anne Lovell 08/10/2026 - 10.38 AM

Can get paper we hung off the wall then there is ordinary lining paper which also comes off easy but under that there is lining paper that has been glossed years ago. Tried scoring, soaking and steaming but it has taken me 12 hours to strip half a dining room wall. Any tips?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Red hot water I mean hot nearly boiling Empty I to a big paint scuttle Use a 12 inch roller with extension to apply Be careful on the downward stroke or you might spray your face with hot water The key to removing paper like that is to leave it to soak in Then apply again over and over At some point it will break down the old paint You will be able to roll all the wall in a few mins Leave for 2/4 mins Repeat and repeat Try not to score the walls if your painting after or you could end up having to skim over the marks This is what I do even on old woodchip that has been glossed over Good luck
