Bricklaying & Repointing

Gauging existing brickwork

Anonymous user 09/10/2026 - 8.09 AM

I have a single storey and two storey wrap around extension being built. The existing brickwork was laid frog down and has a tighter gauge of 73.5/74mm with LBC bricks. The bricklayer wants to stick to normal 75mm gauge, I’ve asked for this to be toothed into existing, so I can’t see how this will work on the 2 storey aspect and how it will align with existing windows on the first floor. He’s now telling me it’s impossible to match the existing coursing. However im not convinced. I’d appreciate a second opinion. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, Only way not possible to match in with the existing is if the existing was built from imperial bricks. You’ve stated the beds are slightly tighter to industry gauge which isn’t ideal but still achievable. I’d always tooth where possible or insight to avoid ugly straight joints, also any openings on the same elevations ideally want to run in line with existing too! Maybe another conversation with the bricklayer? LBC’s in defence to the bricklayer aren’t the best to lay. Regards
