Boiler gauge

Anonymous user 09/10/2026 - 8.06 AM

Boiler gauge is stuck on zero, got hot water but cant put the pressure up or down due to gauge not working. Been told, I should leave it as it is, surely that'd not correct advice as I cant see anything pressure wise, is it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You need a qualified gas engineer to check the boiler for any faults and then check the pressure gauge is functioning correctly. Otherwise you could over pressurise the boiler and cause further problems.

Pressure gauge may be blocked down to sludge but you can fit a extrnal pressure gauge on the heating pipe work to get a reading, or unblock gauge on boiler

You can’t safely establish the pressure your putting into the system I would definitely advise on getting that sorted asap really but it depends on the system if you instance you have a combi boiler that pressure gauge is for the heating so you will continue to get hot water but you won’t have any heating if that makes sense but you should get it changed absolutely

Hi there, this definitely shouldn't be left as is a core safety feature of the system. The pressure gauge only shows the pressure on the central heating side, so a drop in pressure may not affect your hot water unless the boiler itself locks out. If your hot water and central heating both work normally, it points to a fault with the gauge itself (or the pressure sensor on a digital model). These can fail or become blocked with debris. If the heating won't fire up, or the boiler locks out when it's turned on, the system has likely lost pressure, possibly through a leak. A loss that size would usually mean a noticeable amount of water somewhere, so check radiators, valves and visible pipework. Another possibility is a faulty expansion vessel or pressure relief valve in the boiler. You wouldn't see a leak indoors, as the water discharges through the small copper pipe outside, so check whether that's dripping. In the meantime, please don't top the system up using the filling loop. With no reading you could over-pressurise it. A Gas Safe engineer would be required to replace the gauge and check the pressure properly.

The gauge needs checking/replacing. But would recommend to replace it, so you know the actual pressure especially when you topping up the system.

You need to contact a gas safe engineer to take a look at your boiler it sounds like a faulty gauge which needs replaced, leaving it alone is the correct advice because you may add more water pressure to your heating system causing the safety PRV valve to discharge and you may do further damage to your boiler, call an expert pay for there time and knowledge.
