Fixing a tile hole without retiling?

James Wells 09/10/2026 - 8.08 AM

We have a very small wetroom with a low ceiling and small window in a victorian house. Previously we had a black mould problem and the mrs is allergic. Had to remove the floating sink atop a MDF vanity unit. It wasn't sealed properly and there was tons of black mould on the back. Now i need to put a sink back in, but there's this hole in the tiling where the pipes come in. I measured it and it's approx 12cm by 20cm. Given how bad the moisture gets in this room, we need to close this hole so moisture doesn’t get behind it. Can anyone recommend the best way to deal with this? I'm fairly novice at DIY and i don't want to retile.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi What you could do is use plastic splash back to place over the hole and seal around this and around the pipes that need to come through it. This can leave a nice finish to that area.

If you’re installing another vanity unit they generally have a gap at the back for services to run. If you could find an offcut of a plastic wall panel or even a tile backer board like wedi/jackoboard (xps) slightly bigger than the hole and cut the pipe holes nice and tight and glue it over the hole. Then silicon around the pipes. Your vanity unit will hide it all anyway. If you’re fitting a basin and pedestal you could do the same thing it’s just going to be on show.
