Can an electrician handle a consumer unit replacement, new lighting and extra sockets, or will I need other trades? I have an older fuse box in my kitchen and pendant lights throughout my ground-floor flat. I’d like to replace the fuse box with a modern consumer unit, add sockets around the property, and install downlights in all rooms, possibly with LED lighting around the ceiling edges. There is another flat above mine. Would an electrician normally manage the whole job, including any requirements for downlights in the ceiling between the flats? Would I also need a plasterer or another tradesperson to alter the ceilings, conceal wiring and make good afterwards? What checks should the electrician carry out before quoting, and what certificates or approvals should I expect when the work is complete?

You need to check with the Electrician/Company you employ if they make good or not. Some will make good to a point and you may still have to employ someone to complete the work. An example would be the chase for a new socket, Electrician may rough fill with plaster and you would then need to do the finishing plaster and painting. Some may know a plasterer they work with and can price in complete making good for the whole job. Checks would be the condition of the main supply, main earthing and bonding in place. Some Electricians may insist on an EICR before completing a board change, the reason is old fuse boards do not react to some kinds of existing faults unlike the new protective devices will, so it is necessary to ensure there are no existing problems that may need fixing. You will need Building Control notification and an Electrical Installation Certificate.
