Bathroom Install payment

Supplying all materials e.g shower, shower tray, wall panelling, toilet, sink etc. Just after the installation/labour. Is 50% deposit to secure the date reasonable?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

With the customer supplying the materials 50% seems really quite steep to secure the date for labour only (obviously depending on circumstances being time, travel access ect) but to put into perspective we charge a max cap of 20% per day of labour expected as a deposit , 50% seems quite absurd unless youre wanting Nick Knowles to pop past and slap your house on channel 4! 🤣

From my experience, 50% just to secure the date is a bit much, especially if you’re supplying all the materials yourself.
Personally, I’d expect a smaller deposit to secure the booking, then stage payments as the work progresses, with the final balance paid when the job is finished.
Just make sure you have everything agreed in writing — total labour cost, exactly what’s included and when each payment is due.

A deposit to secure the date is reasonable, especially for a full bathroom installation where several days may be reserved for the job. However, if the customer is supplying all the main materials, 50% upfront may feel high. A smaller booking deposit followed by staged payments as the work progresses is often a fairer arrangement for both customer and installer. Whatever is agreed should be clearly written into the quote, including the payment stages and final balance on completion.
