Broken mortice lock

R Davies 01/09/2026 - 8.32 AM

Hi All, I have a pvc French doors at the rear of my house. The door is closed and locked and the lock has failed (as in the key no longer unlocks the door), it just turns in the mechanism and doesn't catch to unlock the door. I know the lock needs replacing, but just trying to figure out the best way to open the door so I can remove the locking mechanism and take to be replaced/fixed. Any advice/suggestions appreciated

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If it’s a barrel lock put a screw into the top of the key hole enough to catch then using the claw of a hammer prize it down the way (sometimes best to do it to both sides simultaneously) and the barrel will snap ,enabling you to remove it then you can manually flick the lock at the top of the hole and open the door to remove the screw so you can replace the barrel . This can be done in 15mins by most joiners I recommend using 1 but hope this helps .
