Rubble removal

My builder is a well respected local. He has helped me renovate my house and has left a large quantity of rubble in my front garden. The other trades added to that pile over time. There was no written quote at the start as he works on an ad hoc basis. The work is now complete but I am left with a hefty bill to have it taken away. My question is, do I discuss this with him, withold his last payment or accept that he would have charged me more over time to take it away?

This should really have been discussed at the very start, it's a fact of life when you renovate there will always be a mess usually the cost of this is included in any quote or the tradesman does not quote to include this and any rubbish removal is the client's problem. You can ask him but would think as it was ad hoc this was not something he had taking into account and costed for. Good luck Alex

The best thing to do is have a chat with him, however did he give you a written quote ? If so, was rubbish removal on that quote. If not and also nothing was discussed about the rubbish then you will more than likely be accountable for removing it. If it was discussed or he agreed to take it or it is on his quote then hold back his last payment and mention it to him that you will pay the final outstanding once the rubbish has been removed.

If the costs of work have been calculated as they went along, I’m guessing approaching them is the best idea but expect any removal cost to be passed on to you in another invoice, including labour to remove. They might however get more favourable rates at commercial waste facilities than you would so worth asking the question. If you’re happy with the work carried out and everything went smoothly it would be a shame to tarnish the relationship over what appears as an oversight from both parties. Good luck
