Hi pal .. 5mm gap is abit big you want 1-3mm gap .. start in the center and work your way to either gable making sure you have sufficient headlap on your eaves and topper course.. working out from the center will allow you to have a get your cuts for each side out of one tapco on your half cuts. Leave the battens long and lay the slates along dry Ensure the roof is the same width top and bottom You will have scope with the tile/ slate and a half You could also gain more adjustment by using undercloak instead and sealing with mixed sand and cement but I would add wire mesh in the verge first and wet the batten ends

For a 640 mm-wide apex canopy, I’d set the Tapco slates out from the centre line rather than starting with a full slate at one side. This should give you a more balanced finish at both verges 1. Mark the centre line of the canopy at 320 mm Dry-lay the first course to see how the slates finish at each verge Set the starter course so the slate joints on the next course fall approximately halfway across the slates below. Avoid automatically starting every alternate course with a full slate; adjust the starting position to keep the verge cuts reasonably equal Check the dry verge manufacturer’s requirements and Tapco’s fixing instructions before cutting or fixing the slates
