Effective damp proofing

We own a house that is estimated to have been built between 1930-1949. We currently have been doing some work to prep for re-plastering and have noticed that what looks like the dampproof course is brittle and snaps easily in some places. We have no signs of damp in the walls of the house but given the age, I'm wondering what is the best way to confirm if it's still effective and, if it isn't, what would be the best/least intrusive way of replacing/resolving it.

Damp is a specialist problem over the years people have used bitumen when you say it’s brittle and it snaps this is not a diy project it would help if I could see the problem ne photo when you say you have no damp problem maybe it’s not what you can see I would really get a specialist,there are several ways people do for damp that is only a temporary measure I have so much equipment that we use to solve damp please remember it is not a DIY project it can cost a lot of money to rectify
