Bathroom Fitting

Remove tiles or leave

Anonymous user 17/08/2026 - 8.12 AM

Bathroom currently tiled. Been up for over 20 years. Tiles by bath stop at bath level. Getting bathroom quotes. Some say they will remove tiles to put wall panels on. Another says leave tiles as adds cost to remove and would need to then put plasterboard on etc Not sure what to do as getting conflicting information.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Ok, sounds like you are getting a lot of conflicting advise here, so I will try and help. Firstly, and I say this to all my customers its your bathroom and you have it how you want it, so do you still like the tiles you have? Secondly, are they still serviceable, that means are you now reconfiguring your bathroom to have a shower installed within the bath? if so then yes more then likely your existing tiles will need to be removed, and ideally the bathroom enclosure that will be exposed to water needs to be tanked. Tanking is a process that requires a waterproofed membrane system being applied to all walls and flooring prior to tiling or panelling. One item you did mention was plasterboard, that is not right! anywhere in a bathroom that is exposed to water prior to tiling that needs either Tile Backer Board or Aquaboard, then Tanking then Tiling or Panelling. Also if your tiles are still liked, and still serviceable, you may just want them to be re-grouted, and choosing a different colour grout can also change the appearance of the existing tiles, making them look fresh and new. I hope the above helps but if you would like a free quotation please contact us at Dronfield All Trades. Best regards

You don't need to remove them but if you have had issues with damp I would take advice.

Hi! It depends on your budget. If you want to spend less you can leave the tiles and put pvc panel on top of the tiles. Down side! By leaving tiles you will loose Atleast 2 to 3 CM space from all 4 sides.

If the existing tiles are in good condition and securely fixed to substrate then they are a good base to tile on provided there are no loose ones and the are plumb. It will bring the wall dimensions in a bit but it’s done a lot rather than ripping perfectly good tiles off for the sake of it and the fact they have sealed the wall for such a long time is even better

Hi, I recommend to keep the tiles on the wall and panels installed on top of it if you want to save money. If tiles are loose or uneven, then it needs to be removed.
