Toilet & sink removed for Tiling
Anonymous user 05/08/2026 - 7.58 AM
Is there a "necessary need" to pull a sink & toilet away from walls to tile? Surely, as I recall, tiling can be cut & placed around if walls are flat enough & appliance accessibility is "open" enough.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There is no strict building code forcing you to pull a sink and toilet away from the walls, and you can cut and place tiles around them if the space allows. However, most professionals strongly advise against it because it creates major aesthetic and functional drawbacks.

If you’re looking for the best finish, it’s generally recommended to remove the sink and toilet before tiling. This allows the tiles to run neatly behind the fittings, giving a cleaner appearance and making it easier to replace sanitaryware in the future without exposing untiled areas.
That said, if the fittings are staying in place and access is limited, an experienced tiler can cut the tiles neatly around them. It comes down to the finish you’re aiming for and your budget.
