Double storey extension. Can we build up to the boundary between the houses?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.55 PM
We've looked at moving house and the cost is very high so thinking of doing a double storey extension. We live in a 3 bed semi and thinking about going out 3 mtrs but not sure about how close to a neighbour we can build? Ideally we would like to go the full width of the house. Our neighbour has a set of french doors leading out to the garden from a kitchen / diner downstairs and a bathroom upstairs on the attached side of the semi. Can we build up to the boundary between the houses? Thanks for ths help.

Yes you can, but you will require planning probably and i would advise you to down load the party wall act and read it carefully. you will have to give your neighbours a written notice of intention a mimimum of one month before any work commences. This should be done for any work being carried out on the boundry

You will need to get in contact with your local council's planning team for some advice with this one. In one of the areas that we work in, first floor side extensions need to be stepped in at least 1 metre and anything more than 50% of the existing width of the house is unlikely to be approved. You will also need to make sure that the extension doesn't compromise the 45 degree line which will be taken from your neighbours' french doors and upstairs windows. However, your local council may allow some flexibility. If you can, arrange to see the council's duty planner and take along some photographs and a sketch of what you may want to build.
