System renewal

I currently have a central heating system fed from an oil burner and feeding hot water to a relatively new water tank with immersion heater. This then supplies radiators around the cottage. We want to convert the system from oil to electric reusing as much of the old infrastructure as possible. The system must also handle cooling of the cottage in summer with a/c in specific rooms. What are our options?

You have a few good options, and the best one depends on your budget, the insulation levels of the cottage, and whether you want to future-proof the property.
Option 1 – Air Source Heat Pump (Recommended)
This is generally the best long-term replacement for an oil boiler.
* Replace the oil boiler with an air source heat pump.
* Reuse your existing hot water cylinder if it is heat pump compatible (many newer cylinders are, but it would need checking).
* Reuse most of your existing heating pipework.
* Existing radiators may be suitable, although some may need upgrading to larger sizes as heat pumps operate at lower flow temperatures.
* Install wall-mounted air conditioning units in the rooms you want to cool. These provide cooling in summer and can also provide very efficient heating in spring and autumn.
Pros:
* Lowest running costs when designed correctly.
* Eligible for grants (such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, subject to availability and eligibility).
* Future-proof and environmentally friendly.
* Can combine heating, hot water and cooling.
Cons:
* Higher initial installation cost.
* May require some radiator upgrades.
Option 2 – Electric Boiler
Replace the oil boiler with an electric boiler.
* Existing pipework and radiators can usually remain.
* Existing hot water cylinder can often be retained.
* Separate air conditioning units would still be required for cooling.
Pros:
* Lower installation cost.
* Minimal changes to the existing heating system.
* Quiet and compact.
Cons:
* Electricity is significantly more expensive than oil or a heat pump, so running costs can be high.
* Not ideal for larger properties.
Option 3 – Air-to-Air Heat Pump (Split Air Conditioning)
Install multiple air conditioning units that both heat and cool the property.
* Excellent for cooling in summer.
* Very efficient heating.
* Existing radiator system could remain solely for hot water or as a backup.
Pros:
* Excellent cooling.
* Fast response.
* Very efficient heating.
Cons:
* Doesn’t heat water, so you’d still need a separate hot water solution.
* Heat is delivered via warm air rather than radiators.
Option 4 – Hybrid Approach
Many people renovating cottages choose a combination:
* Air source heat pump for heating and hot water.
* Existing radiator system retained where practical.
* Air conditioning units installed in bedrooms and living areas for summer cooling and additional winter heating.
This provides the most comfortable year-round solution.
Before deciding
I’d recommend having a full heat loss calculation carried out. This will determine:
* Whether your existing radiators are large enough.
* Whether your hot water cylinder is compatible.
* The correct size of heat pump.
* Expected running costs.
Without this, it’s impossible to recommend the correct equipment with confidence.
From what you’ve described - a cottage currently heated by oil with a relatively new cylinder and a desire for summer cooling - an air source heat pump combined with separate air conditioning units in the rooms you want to cool would typically be the most practical and future-proof solution while allowing much of the existing heating infrastructure to be reused.
