Electrical

finding location of fault in ceiling lighting circuit.

Anonymous user 07/07/2026 - 7.49 AM

All ceiling lights have died. A new 1.5mm² LSLF (low smoke low flame) cable has been installed and used to link two circuits together, effectively bridging the original wiring.this was done by a previous spark 9 years ago. The new sparkie has come out to fix and cannot find the loops/connector at any of the pendants/switches.And I dont really want to have to cut out uneccesary holes in the ceiling. the connections/loops/junction box is likely hidden behind a plasterboard ceiling. I need help locating the area of the connection to be able to try to fix the issue. any ideas on the best way to approach this? many thanks

All the electrician can do is test from locations of access. It seems they have done this and there are connections in inaccessible locations. This is something we try to avoid unless absolutely necessary but is normally a symptom of a cheap job, though not always. I am afraid you will have to cut holes in the ceiling with educated guesses to where the connectors might be. It might be worth trying an endoscopy camera but chances are the cables go through holes in joists you won’t be able to get through but if the you get some idea of the route from this you may be able to map out how it was wired and this may help in determining the likely location of the joints.
