Feasibility of drilling external wall into floor void for CCTV/lighting installation
Anonymous user 07/07/2026 - 7.47 AM
Hi, I want to install some CCTV cameras and outdoor lighting at a height of around 2.6 metres on my house. To hide the cables, I'm planning to hire someone to cut the ceiling plasterboard, drill from the external brick wall straight into the floor void, and fish the wires through the metal web joists to the closest light switch. Is it safe to do that, and is this something a handyman can handle? Also, can the cables be routed along the edge of the void and dropped down behind the wall plasterboard, or will that gap be blocked off? Thanks!

It's something I could do but it would take a full day. Instead of cutting the plaster board I'd personally go under the floor boards and run the wire's to the nearest light with it being up stairs or down.
I'd channel the wall out and if you don't want mess, you could put trunking in the corner of the any room.
That's the lights.
Most CCTV comes with with a recording box most people put it in the loft. CCTV nowadays come with ways to supply it to the TV or phone both. Putting it on the wall is the easy bit. Dippending were you put the power supply or and recording box your going to need a power supply for that too.
