Best type of render for 1910 house
Anonymous user 09/07/2026 - 7.55 AM
What is the best type of render to use on a semi detached house built around 1910. Currently has pebble dash but this is starting to fail in areas. Other houses in the area have had newer types of render but lots of these are now looking stained/streaky and I really want to avoid this. What are the best options?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would definitely consider using a non hydraulic lime putty/hot mixed putty (not NHL)
This would be sympathetic to the softer bricks that were used at that time.
Using an NHL or cement often leads to spalling, cracked masonry and or rotten timber e.g. lintels.
Be aware that NHL and non-hydraulic lime are different, also any tradesman adding hydrated lime to cement and calling it lime is blagging about things they don't understand enough.
Lime putty is also the most vapour permeable (breathable) and will actually help regulate moisture whilst also being naturally antimicrobial.
