Hairline crack

Neil Clay 03/07/2026 - 3.50 PM

Hello. I have a hairline crack that runs the width of my bathroom ceiling. I've filled it in the past but it constantly reopens. Is there anything I can do about this, please?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There could be any number of reasons for hairline cracks... Is the ceiling lath and plaster, or plasterboard? Plasterboard should be screwed, staggered and scrimmed before plastering. Cracks can often appear if these haven't been done properly. One solution could be installing screws around the join into the joists, and using a wide scrim before re-plastering. Overboarding is an option too, but a bit overkill for hairline cracks.
