external painting in a 3 floors house altrenative to an scafolding please
David fern 07/07/2026 - 7.46 AM
I’m looking for the most cost-effective way to paint the front of my three-story Victorian house with a bay window. I can paint the ground and first floors myself, but I need a safe way to access the second floor. What would be the cheapest option? Full scaffolding is very expensive, and I’d rather avoid drilling into the brickwork to install any fixings. Thank you!

Cheapest option, buy a long ladder.
Next cheapest buy or rent a 7m tower (you can get them on Amazon, or rent from various companies online)
Next cheapest get a painter to do it for you.
Next cheapest get a partial scaffhold.
Safest; hire a painter and get the scaffhold.
Sorry mate there's no shortcuts or cheap work arounds to working at height, especially with health and safety regs as they are.

Tower scaffolding so it doesn’t need fixings just the apropiate support legs or mewps or ladders are the only options.

Hey mate, you have a few options that you can use there might be more but the ones i can think of are,
1. Scaffold tower – Much cheaper than full scaffolding if the access is straightforward. However, a bay window often makes positioning a tower difficult unless you can bridge over it.
2. Cherry picker / MEWP – Can be cost-effective if there’s good access from the road or driveway. Hiring one for a day or two may work out cheaper than a full scaffold, but you’ll need suitable ground access.
3. Part scaffolding – Ask scaffolders to quote for a scaffold to just the front elevation or only around the bay and upper floor. This can be significantly cheaper than a full wrap-around scaffold.
(For point 2 i would only chose that if you actually know what your doing or take a short course prior or just ignore point 2 entirely and choose 1. Or 3. I cant condone point 2 unless you're a competent and trained person or you have someone who is competent and trained with you.)

The safest and most cost-effective option depends on the property layout. For a three-storey Victorian house with a bay window, full scaffolding is often the safest solution. In some cases, a mobile scaffold tower or a cherry picker may be a more affordable alternative, but this depends on access and ground conditions. I wouldn't recommend working from ladders alone at that height. A site visit would help determine the safest and most economical option.

The scaffolding can cross brace so no drilling in to the walls the cheapest way would to use a 3 part ladder but that would make the job so much more difficult and would take longer for completion .

What's the rough width of your property? I would temporarily hire a scaffold tower that's adjustable and movable and use that to cover the entirety of the work needed in sections. It makes a lot more sense to do this than to put full scaffolding up just for a paint job.
